BURNEY - A 28-year-old Burney man was killed in an apparent hunting accident northeast of Burney Mountain on Saturday - the first day of deer season, law enforcement officials said.
About 7:30 a.m., Michael Wood was hunting when he was apparently shot and killed by a rifle fired by one of three fellow hunters, Sgt. Jim Mize of the Shasta County Sheriff's Department said.
"It looks like a hunting accident involving a group of friends," he said.
The man died at the scene.
Mize would not comment on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. His three companions, whose names were not released pending the outcome of the investigation, are all from Shasta County, Mize said.
While investigators said the shooting appears accidental, a report will be submitted to the Shasta County district attorney's office for review, sheriff's officials said.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, Mize said.
A handful of hunting accidents have occurred in Shasta County in the past few years.
"It's a pretty rare occurrence," Mize said.
The last hunting death in Shasta County was in October 1996, when a 39-year-old Redding man accidentally shot himself in the face in the La Moine area.
Last October, a 69-year-old Redding man was accidentally shot in the leg by his hunting partner in the Montgomery Creek area. In November 2000, a 25-year-old hunter accidentally shot himself in the leg in the Manton area. Two months earlier a 32-year-old Ukiah man was accidentally shot in the leg by a friend while deer hunting in the Whitmore area.
In Siskiyou County, a 39-year-old Fairfield man was accidentally shot and killed near Etna in October by his hunting partner.
Mize urged people to use caution when out hunting.
"They should always be alert of other hunters and be aware of their surroundings when firing their weapons," he said.

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.
"It was like that when I got here".
