It serves the same purpose as any other semi-auto sub gun/carbine, but in the more socially acceptable wood stock. The Camp 9 and the Camp .45 and the Ruger .44 Mag carbines were staples for many years, and they all served their purpose. They hit harder than a 10/22 when you need something more.

Not sure I understand the rationale behind a carbine in a modest pistol caliber. If I want the weight and bulk of a rifle I want rifle power. Now, something like a .44 Magnum carbine makes sense in certain circumstances, but a 9MM or a .45 ACP does not. Am I wrong? What purpose does it serve?

Well the best reason I can think of is BECAUSE I WANT ONE

And if a 45 carbine was good enough for our boys in WWII then it's good enough for me and the 1927A1 is a heavy SOB to be lugging around all day,:)
I have SHTF rifles ,but I just picked up a Marlin camp 9 and i wanted this one to round out my collection.
By the way I found one :)
But maybe two would be better.

Saxon, I really like my Marlin Camp 9, it's just a fun gun to shoot, compact, and good-looking. It exchanges mags with a pistol I have, so I only had to invest in one set of pre-ban hi-caps for both. The ammo is cheap enough so you don't feel poor after shooting 100 rds, but the right kind of 9mm ammo can do in a pinch for self-defense. Yes, it's a compromise caliber between .22 for fun and cost on the one hand, and larger for serious self-defense and hunting on the other. The same holds for the .45 version, just a little more expensive and powerful. These guns appeal more to people like myself who have a limited number of guns (and mags) than to people who have dozens. If you have that many, you can pick the ideal gun for each use.

I have a Marlin Camp 9 and I like the hell out of it. I pack it in my Jeep a lot. Pretty damn accurate to about 75 yards.

But hey, buy want you want. I just think that I would rather have a .223 carbine than a semi 9MM or .45 ACP.

I have .223 rifles (AR's) and I have 7.62x39 and I have a russian tiger arriving today, the real russian tiger in 7.62x54.,but i wanted a fun rifle for cheap plinking.

I'm happy that someone with more guns and experience than I have thinks those Marlin Camps are fun guns. I was beginning to think that it only seemed like fun, it really wasn't if I knew better.

Listen to SaxonPig, .44 Magnum, is the way to go. Personally have a Winchester 94, and Ruger Carbine, both .44 Magnum. Both very effective.
