a friend of mine was at the feed store the other day and the subject of guns came up{imagine that} he said a man approched him and announced "yea i like the .308 myself{7.62} it was what i shot in the marines when i was a sniper" this sounds like crap to me and i was wondering, i dont go around and announce to people that i have a major league throwing arm {oops} why would some guy go around saying he was a "sniper" when its, A-obviously sounds like boasting, and B- the subject wasnt about that really. just wondering yall's opinion especially those with military service.

Those who have done don't brag about it. Those who brag are usually full of *.

....I have met two individuals who did serve as snipers, they didn't come accross as bragging....more just a matter of fact. I have no reason to doubt their honesty, I never pushed the topic for fear of opening some unpleasant memories for them....guess it all has to be taken in the context it was given.

Those that have walked the talk do not need to talk about their walk. There are other admirers that will do that for them--just not in their presence.

Sadly there are those people who lack their own personal self esteem, bought by hard work and dedication to a given profession or discipline. These people must create an illusion to survive their otherwise pathetic lives. Those of us who actually walked the walked keep quiet so as not to wake the ghosts.

The Remington 700`s that were addapted to sniper use in Nam were chambered for the .308 round. Most of the older guys prefered the Winchester model 70 or the 1903A4 Springfields because they were chambered for the more powerful 30-06 round. Todays military still uses the Remington .308 (M40A1), although there is talk of upgrading to the .300 Winchester mag round.

The guys I've met that are bonafide Snipers for the Military or other Government agencies don't talk about it. In fact they don't talk, they just grunt....

I generally keep my mouth shut about my military service, as do friends of mine. When I was younger, I was walking 'billboard' of badges, "I was there" crap, but I slowly realized that the common folk don't relate to tales of military life. So, after a fashion, the military garb went, with the exception of the crewcut, which I personally think is the perfect 'no maintenance' haircut. lol.If I'm asked in respectful company, I'll tell them what they want to know. Where I was, what I did, was I scared? etc. Do I embellish on this?.. NO! It would scar me deeply if one of my listeners had in his/her mind to go join the military and do dangerous things just to be like 'me'.
