I have a rifle at auction and when it comes time to sell, I don't want the stupid * at the counter getting a bug up his butt when I tell him that there is a rifle in the case. I am curious, have you had more luck with UPS or USPS in this regard? There is a UPS center and a post office fairly close, and I know it is legal both ways to an FFL.

Postal regulations state that the postmaster cannot even inquire if your package contains a rifle or shotgun. You do not have to tell them what is in it. Go to USPS site and it is in the regs.

Hmm. Interesting. On Postal handout C024.6.0, they say in paragraph 4.0 that the postmaster must not inquire on the legality of mailing firearms, but just above it in paragraph 3.0, it says that the mailer may be required to establish, by writing or opening the package, that the gun is not loaded and does not violate the gun control act of 1968. This implies that the contents must be disclosed. So here is a question: how many of you have shipped via USPS? Upon doing so, do you disclose contents? Yes or no?

I go postal. Oops I mean I ship rifles through the post office. The only thing they ask is if its hazardous, liquid, etc. My postal clerk said that I do not have to disclose what is in the package unless it is something that will in some way harm someone.

USPS is cheaper, at least for me, and I'm comfortable enough with the regs to just send my longarms thataway. With all of the horror stories I have heard about Fed-Ex and UPS, I don't even want to gamble on them.

I use the USPS, and I don't disclose what's in the box. I try real hard to get the same clerk(s) I've used before, even going as far as letting people go ahead of me in line. When I get asked the 'is it hazardous' question, I honestly tell them no, after all, a weapon broken down is not 'hazardous', at least in my opinion. As for UPS, only if I have no choice or I can't get my FFL guy to mail a handgun for me. As for them not being able to inquire, you have to write down the contents of your package on the form. I won't lie so I tell them what it is, and grit my teeth as 30 or so UPS employees debate on whether or not I can mail my package thru them. Oh yeah, also involved is a dozen or so phone calls. By the time I'm done, I feel like Osama's cousin mailing ammo to Tora Bora. Some people tell me they have no problems mailing firearms, I have yet to experience this nirvana. Maybe I should get rid of the Turban and beard. At any rate, USPS first, and UPS if it can't avoided.
