Started with MSN (Dell Net). Was free for one year when buying a Dell. Free year over.Seemed to always have "issues". Tired of their inability to "fix their fixes". Only dial up available. Have tv/radio cable but cable co. says can't add. They've run a seperate fibre optics line, stopping 1,000 ft. from us. They plan to have in by Fall. Need recommendations. Can't stand this poor service, and being lied to by MSN techs.

Earthlink has been the number 1 rated service for a long time for serious users. AOL takes over your computer FAR too much, like MSN does. Earthlink will run on very old machines or brand new ones with equal ease, the only difference being that on a new computer they'll give you a CD-ROM with software which you may install. HOWEVER, if you don't want to install their software you don't have to. You can choose to simply use your Internet Explorer (or Netscape) and Outlook Express. You'll log on more reliably, be booted off less, and generally maintain more control over your own computer environment. While MSN keeps their logon and POP3 addresses secret, Earthlink will gladly provide you with instructions on how to enter the addresses and set up your own dial-up to log on and connect. You don't even need to run their CD to start using Earthlink. I don't work for them. I just know they're very very good. I'm stuck with MSN for a while yet but as soon as I get a chance I will go back to Earthlink myself. Don't bother with ad-heavy stuff like Juno or NetZero. I understand that AT&T's less expensive service, WorldNet is also ad-heavy, so watch out. If for some reason you can't go for Earthlink, I'd say try AT&T but it's a secondary choice in my opinion, and I wouldn't go for a $10 a month service -- you get too many ads at that price almost anywhere. I'll be happy to answer any other questions I can if you e-mail me.

I checked into Earthlink. I wanted to be billed in the mail but they do it by CC unless you sign up for Sprint $.07 per minute, then it's included on your phone bill. Didn't want to give them the CC to autobill me but didn't want to change long distance carrier either. Eventually I decided to sign up online for Earthlink but low-and-behold, their site wouldn't acceptmy city, state, zip combination. One I've had for 6 years. I emailed their customer service telling them their site didn't work. The emailed back saying I could register by phone and basically ignored the fact their site did not work. I emailed back stating I've had this address for 6 years. Basically got another form email back. Emailed them again stating that I was very disatisfied with my current providers technical problems and if I can't do something as simple as register on their site they why should I be inclined toswitch to them. Never heard back so that pretty much sealed the deal. All sounds pretty trivial but DAMMIT, I'm fed up with poor customer service and the fact that they didn't even address the issue of their site not working properly.

Greenie --You shoulda called their 800 number -- likely would have been the last glitch you ever had with them. But I see your frustration.University -- I've been hearing that ATT service has improved somewhat in the advertising department, which is why I don't rule them out. I wonder what you'd pay without long distance...?

Check Outdoors Unlimited; they've been endorsed by NRA & I've been impressed by their commitment to good service. $20 / mo dial up ISP, w/ $1 of that going to the Hunting / Shooting /Fishing / Outdoors organization of your choice.

AT&T WorldNet is great. I have an unlimited access account for my company that we use for testing, travel, and emergencies, and it is $19.95/mo, but we signed up during a special a few years back. I think the standard rate is $21.95/mo or so. Verio dial-up used to be very good, but they sold off their dial-up business to EarthLink. I've never used EarthLink, but they sure seem to acquire a lot of dial-up from other ISP's -- Verio, Flash.net, Mindspring . . . . .

GreenLantern,It might have been your current ISP blocking your attempt to register with Earthlink? The programmers do devious things--example: MSN (I don't have their service, but use a free Hotmail account) will block links I receive in my email--MSN doesn't want people leaving "their ad filled" site. ___________Guns & Glass,I've been satisified with Earthlink; as noted, they let you "strip down" their software and just use what you like. Decent support for Mac users too.

offer ~ yeah, I'm sure they would have taken care of it if I'd have called. It was probably just a day were the little things ticked me off so I made mountains out of mole hills.competentone ~ Never heard of any sites doing any blocking or interference. I suppose it's always possible, but I'd think that if it ever leaked out it would be a minor PR embarassment that a company wouldn't want in the first place.Think I'm going to check out ATT Net though since I do have their long distance and if I can get access for $7 a month.

UNIVERSITY50 ~ how did you find out about the $7 plan? I check att net and didn't see anything pertaining to getting a better rate if you have long distance with ATT.

G & G and Green,MSN does their "blocking" using the comment "there was an error in displaying this link..." Normally, they'll let me leave their network once or twice, then they'll start the blocking. If I log-out, delete the MSN cookies, and log back in, I can link out another one or two times, then they'll "block" again using the "error" message. You can tell the sort-of "control freaks" that they are by looking at the number of cookies they plant on your hard-drive when you use their email--compare the number of cookies to the number you get if you use something like Yahoo's email. It's just all consistent with the "Microsoft--YOU WILL OBEY US" mentality; the nerds taking revenge through their programs...
