I've heard South Dakota is pretty liberal. People still drive around with rifles hung in the back windows of their pickups, or so they say. I wonder about Alaska, but wouldn't choose to live there. Indiana, where I am, isn't too bad. CCWs are easy to get if you're law abiding and not crazy. But oddly, the states around me -- Michigan, Ohio and Illinois -- are not nearly as liberal in terms of gun freedoms. Although there is reciprocity regarding carry permits with Michigan.

Vermont at the moment, BUT with the influx of yuppie refugees from the East Coast toilet states, the politics there have become increasingly liberal (liberal Dem governor, liberal Dem Senator, a Republican turncoat "independent" who usually voted Democrat in DC before his high profile conversion of convenience and the one Congressman is the only Socialist holding national office in the country); the laws are likely to change. NH is - IMHO - a for candidate for second place and a likely to last a little longer, but again, like VT, we've been burdened with carpetbagging mushbrain liberal vermin moving north from the sewers along the East Coast.

Here in Upstate New York we still carry our guns in the back window. Some even have forward-firing brownings mounted on their trucks.

Arizona is pretty good too. It's not unusual to see a semi auto in somebody's belt at Wal-Mart, and with all the indian reservations nearby, there are plenty of paperwork free sales. A CCW costs $120 for the class and the 3year permit.

Offeror: What's changed in Michigan that I haven't heard about? According to the many people I know there, you have to register any handgun (inculding blackpowder and BB) with the county and have it subjected to a "safety check" (whatever that is), and if you want to take it into a different county, you have to do the same in that county. Also, according to the hunting regs, if I bring a handgun into Michigan from Wisconsin, I'm committing a felony. Did I miss something? BTW, Wisconsin has no CCW, and it is doubtful that it will, since Tommy Thompson went to D.C. to join Bush. The regs, from this past hunting season also state that a CCW from another state is not legal in Michigan without registration and a safety check in the county in which it will be used???

You are lucky in that I just happened to grab some literature off the NRA table at the last gun show. From a pamphlet called "NRA/ILA Firearms Laws for Michigan, A Synopsis of State Laws..." comes the following:
"CARRYINGIt is unlawful to carry a handgun concealed on or about one's person or concealed or openly in a vehicle without a license to carry a concealed pistol. Exceptions: No license is required when: [snipped out the first five points]6. A person who is licensed to carry a concealed pistol in the state of his residence."
This confirms what I had heard in the past. Please don't take this as the last word on the subject. The pamphlet is dated: "Rev. 10/2001."

By the way, you're right about the inspections and certificates for Michigan residents. Non-residents seem to have it easier with occasional concealed carry. Of course, I suppose you still might be right about having to present such a gun for inspection. You may also be right about restricting the use of handguns for hunting, although I'm pretty sure my cousin occasionally hunts Michigan without problems with long guns.

I've found AL to be cool so far. Took me 10 min. and $10 to get my CCW from the Sheriff. From here on out, all I have to do is mail in a copy of it with a $10 check every year, and they mail me a new one.And of course people have guns in the rack in the back window here.

By far...Wyoming or South Dakota. No state income tax, liberal gun laws, cheap cigarettes, bountiful natural resouces, and barely a million residents between the two states. Live in a state where your vote means more proportionally. Your vote means more here than it does in Minnesota(the land where nothing is legal)which has about 12 million residents. Michigan CCW law changed in July of 2001. Now, the CCW law is the same statewide (no more county-by-county differences). However, some counties are still dragging their feet when it comes to actually issuing the permits. To legally obtain a handgun in Michigan a resident must first get a permit to purchase from his local PD. Then, within 10 days, he must acquire his gun or the permit will expire. Then, within 10 days of purchase the gun must be taken back to the purchase-permit issuing PD for a "safety inspection". This inspection checks the serial number against a database of known stolen and/or illegal firearms. If approved, you get a "Safety Inspection Certificate" issued under the authority of the State Police valid indefinitely. If not, they confiscate your gun. A sidearm may be carried while hunting, completely exposed, without a CCW. If you cover the sidearm with your coat or go inside a motor vehicle the gun is then considered concealed and you must have a valid CCW. Anybody who possesses a pre-July 2001 CCW must abide by the new laws as well as any restrictions placed on the old permit. All new permits are "general", meaning that there are no more bank-business only permits. However, the new law prohibits anyone except law-enforcement from carrying a CCW in a whole bunch of places such as a school, anyplace that is licensed to serve alcohol, stadiums, places with seating over 2500, etc. Of course, we know that nobody ever needs to defend themselves in any of those places because criminals abide by all firearms laws too. Finally, an individual may carry a concealed weapon on private property without a license. Duh, I wonder how they could regulate it if you couldn't?Anyway, Michigan is definitely NOT the easiest place to carry any type of weapon and is definitely NOT the most gun-friendly state. But, when compared to states like California we have it good.

Even with the liberal douchebags running my state, Washington is still pretty firearms friendly."Shall issue" laws concerning concealed weapons permits, just a background check with no training classes. Fifty bucks for five years. No restrictions on gun shows or any other private firearms sales. No state income tax. No sales tax on groceries. The outrageous vehicle license tab tax was recently reduced to thirty bucks for all vehicles. (Before that, the annual license renewal fees were based on the value of the vehicle and could run as high as a thousand bucks per year)Lots of back country to go shooting in.Please DON'T move here.

Lowrider, I envy you. I was born in Whatcom County, and most my relatives are in Skagit County in Mt. Vernon and Burlington, where both my parents were raised. I wish I lived up there rather than in this... this... well Nunn will yell at me if I say it I guess WA is great if you aren't in King County. I sorta forget about the rest of the state when I think about how much I hate it here.

I remember when I moved out here, I called up the PD to ask where it would be safe to fire my shotgun. He gave me the details, and summed it up in one phrase:"Point in any direction and drive 15 minutes. Fire away."

There is no free state. Nor a free America for that matter. Our "bill of rights" were suppose to be our "freedom", but it has been reduced to "The bill of priveliges" (You have rights with our permission).

Thanks, offeror and Concealed. That clears it up, (kinda). BTW, I have been stopped in MI (62mph in 55mph zone at 3 A.M.), the trooper asked if I had any weapons or drugs, told him I had a shotgun and a .22 behind the seat, in cases. He didn't even look, just gave me a verbal and let me on my way. Must have been looking for DUI's...

In PA. there are only two places you can't take a weapon 1.a Courthouse 2.School Property. Plenty of wooded land left but not for long.

SW Kansas ain't too bad! Still lots of land to hunt and plenty of varmints, whitetails and muleys. Have to drive a little for good fishing though. Most landowners are still good at giving permission to hunt. Dry and windy, but not that heavily populated.

Hey AD: I work for the City of Burlington so I may know some of your relatives.Rat: I haven't done any fishing for a long time but I think they're getting some nice ones out of the Skagit, Nooksack and Stilliguamish Rivers.Jet: Yeah, Mount Vernon is a big city these days. The traffic is too much to handle. Might as well be in Seattle.

Hey 25-06 youre right about SW Kansas,,here in NW Kansas you'd be pressed to find a pickup that didn't have a firearm in it. Mostly see mini's and AR's. We got a lot of crack shots that prefer Ruger #1's and bolt action guns though. You can be a fishin' in from about a half an hour to an hour pretty easy. It doesn't matter what firearm you have in your vehicle if it's in plain view.No class 3 stuff though. Our Governor vetoed a concealed carry bill I believe twice. Thats ok he's out of here next election because of term limits. And if you got a pistol under the seat and you get stopped, just tell the officer first thing about it. South Dakota is a cool state, judging from my Sturgis adventures, Black Hills are God's Country. However, don't carry a pocket knife into a bar,,I was at a Howard Johnsons in Rapid City one "Rally" week and when the "Chips" saw that I had my trusty Uncle Henry in it's sheath on my belt,,,,,,got took outside,,got checked for warrants,,was told that if my knife was just a hair bigger I'd spent the night in the pokey,,, oh'' and by the way my Harley has never been "trailered" anywhere for all you RUB's out there.
