Question on SAR 1

Ok, I just bought my first and second rifle a few days ago. One of them is an egyptian SAR (AK 47). There was quite a bit of confusion at the gun shop when i went to purchase it. One guy said that it would be illegal for me to put hi-cap mags in the egyptian because it only has 10 american parts, and the romanian has 11 so it would be legal for that one. I chose to stick with the egyptian for the ease of adding accessories like a new stock, etc. The guy said the only way it would be legal is if the floor plate of the mags were stamped "made in USA". Can anyone give me the skinny on this?

I never heard of this. Everyone I know has said it was okay to use in either. The only illegal thing would be if you modified a gun to accept hi-cap detachable magazines, like the SKS.

Pikeal1, the guy that indicated the need for the additional US parts was mostly correct. You actually need the two "US" parts in the magazine for the gun to be legal. The two parts are the US follower and the US floor plate. Some of the last Egyptian AK's had not only the 2 parts in the short mag that comes with the gun, but also an additional follower and floor plate in the box to put into another magazine to make it legal too. All of this has nothing to do with the mag holding 5 rounds or 30 rounds or whatever. It has to do with the total number of US parts in the gun to make it legal with a pistol grip and legal for importation after 1997. The Romanian ones have additonal US parts on the inside. The Egyptian ones MUST have the 2 US parts in the magazine for legality. If you were to just put any old magazine into the gun (without US parts), you just committed a felony. As stupid as that sounds, it is true. The existance of the Romanian, Egyptian and other pistol grip AK's is based on the loophole in the law regarding US/foreign hybrid guns. They can legally have a pistol grip as long as they have enough US parts. On the Egyptian AK's the two US parts in the magazine are counted as part of the total number. Without those two parts, the gun is not legal. Is anyone ever going to check? Doubtful, but all it takes is that one guy at the range that one time and you are screwed. I have encouraged people to buy the Romanian ones for that reason. They have enough parts internally that they don't need the two in the magazine. You can put any magazine, or drum for that matter, into the Romanian and be perfectly legal. Put the wrong mag into your Egyptian and you may be looking at a felony. Stupid, but true.

I believe the gunshop has given you the correct information.I'm not sure about the exact "number" of parts, but I have read/heard that the Egyptian AK's are not like Romanian's and do require the high capacity magazine with American parts.(I never said this!) Someone could get a little "U.S." punch stamp and...Also, I believe you can find additional American made AK parts to add so all mags would be legal.

i don't have an "assault" weapon so i don't know much about this stuff, but these laws are the craziest crap i've ever heard about...if the world didn't think gun owners were blood thirsty maniacs, there'd be marching on washington...as it is, we have to sort out these byzantine rules, made to satisfy housewives in nyc, by ourselves over the internet! meanwhile, people that could care less about laws are wreaking havoc with every breath- encouraging further "gun control" over guys and gals that make some effort to decide if their ballistically challenged relic has a bayonet lug or some such silliness...even more discouraging is the sense i have that we have reached some sort of stasis, wherein we'll be wrangling over this stuff forever, between the rock and a hard place of the constitution and "well meaning folks"...

ok, so the next step would be, where can I find a few floor plates and followers for a couple of mags that I just ordered? Thanks a lot for all the info you guys, I was itching for this board to come back up so I can ask. And what else would I be able to change in order to make the gun legal?
