Law Enforcement Groups to Announce Support for Reauthorizing Federal
Assault Weapons Ban; Ban Will Expire in 2004
To: National Desk
Contact: Amy Stilwell of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun
Violence, 202-898-0792

News Advisory:

Major law enforcement groups will gather in the nation's capital
on Monday, September 23, to express their strong support for the
renewal of the federal Assault Weapons Ban, which is scheduled to
expire in September 2004, unless Congress passes legislation to
renew it. The Assault Weapons Ban was passed as part of the 1994
Crime Bill. The law required domestic manufacturers to stop
production of semiautomatic assault weapons, such as UZIs and
AK-47s, and ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds except for
military or police use.

Many Americans do not know that the Assault Weapons ban will
expire in 2004, and that the federal lawmakers elected to Congress
this November will decide whether this life-saving law remains in
effect.

Assault weapons like AK-47s pose a serious threat to our
communities and to our public safety officials. The clock is
ticking and we must act now to ensure that this legislation is not
allowed to expire. Join leaders of our national law enforcement
organizations to learn how the federal Assault Weapons Ban will
affect our communities and neighborhoods if it is allowed to expire
in September 2004, and to hear their united voice in support of
reauthorizing this critical law.

WHAT:
Press conference to raise awareness that the federal Assault
Weapons Ban will expire in September 2004 and to highlight law
enforcement's support for the law.

WHO:
1. Steve Sposato - (His wife, Jody was murdered with an assault
weapon in a San Francisco office building massacre in 1993.)

2. Leaders of National Law Enforcement Organizations
Major Cities Chiefs Association
National Association of Police Organizations
Police Foundation
National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives
Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association

Take this into consideration with the upcoming elections. Start writing your reps and senators now and make sure they understand that we will not stand for this kind of bull$hit.

Saxon: In keeping with certain sentiments expressed in the "What would you do...?" post, I could not now, in good conscience, and in keeping with my responsibility to protect America from what I adjudge to be a possible terrorist threat, sell you a weapon of personal destruction, even if it is only a NIB S&W Mod 53 for $67.50.

Frolics with Sheeps, Failing to sell a weapon based upon a post is preposturous. Anyways 500 lb. bomb can be made from supplies from Home Depot, not with your FFL.

snake-eyes: Well, if I was a senior sales associate at Home Depot, I certainly wouldn't sell him fertilizer. And it's a darn good thing I don't own a Texaco station, cuz I wouldn't sell him gasoline, either. Some of us have to take and stand against terrorism and keep the Timothy McVeys of this country at bay.

you would think that instead of taking shots at others on this board, we would be writing letters to see if we can change someones mind about the renewal of this damn assault weapon ban.

am I the only one that is SERIOUSLY PISSED about this???

pikeal1: Sorry my comments are not befitting the seriousness of this topic and the board on which it appears. I am really hating myself right now. I may just go order sushi to punish myself. Thank you for snapping me back to the gravity of the situation...and the forum.

this isn't directed at anyone in particular...i like watching all the bitching and fighting here myself. I miss the good old days of Whiteclouder and Bullzeye getting into arguments here just as much as anyone else. I do believe however that this thread should be treated a little more seriously and maybe get some attention where it needs it most.

in any case...here is the letter I wrote to all my reps and senators...if you think its good enough, copy and paste at your leisure...If you do use it...you can give the credit to your dog for all I care...just as long as some sort of message is sent. If anyone has a better one...feel free to post it too.

    Good afternoon,

I am writing to urge your support for the sunset of the "assault weapon" ban that is due in September of 2004. The bill of rights GUARANTEES us the right to keep and bear arms and GUARANTEES that this right SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

Besides the fact that this ban is clearly unconstitutional, it is obvious that criminals do not obey laws...otherwise they wouldn't be criminals to begin with. By banning these weapons, law abiding citizens are clearly at a disadvantage. Criminals will continue to purchase these weapons on the black market and will continue to terrorize citizens who will not be able to defend themselves.

I strongly believe that this country is a great place to live, and I would not trade it for any other piece of land in the world...but I feel as if my rights are being stripped a little bit more each day. This is just another example of those same rights being taken away.

I urge you to support the sunset of this ridiculous ban and look forward to seeing one of our rights restored.

    Thank you.

I really hope that ban sunsets, cause I already sold my pre-ban investment firearm. Actually if it doesn't I'm either going to be really pissed and moving to another country, or going to jail cause I'm gonna own so many illegal guns its not even funny....

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

    Lee,

You speak somewhat in jest, but (and I hate to be mersenary here) but some of us would really be hurt in the wallet by that law lapsing. I've got pre-ban stuff laying around everywhere. I know I'll never get rich with this stuff, but my boy might have some valuable items here someday. I guess that's why I buy (along with really enjoying it).

By the way ... I put my money on Rosie!

cbx, not good strategy to invest in something because of an *artificial* limit on supply. Buying a pre-ban exotic because of rarity is one thing, buying a pre-ban whatever because it's pre-ban might (no offense, but I hope) be a poor investment. Buy it to shoot or fondle, but not as an investment.

Icon, I've got to respectfully disagree with you on your "Not an investment" statement. Right now as 2004 looms upon us, there will be a panic sell off. Many will force themselves into a sellout based on wishfull thinking because as we should all understand by now, once you give up a right (especially gun rights) you almost never get it back. Much like the stock market, the flood of prebans being dumped will bring the price down. Then there will be those who see the BIGGER picture, those are the guys who will be snapping them up as fast as they can get the money out of their accounts. You should know as well as I do, firearm value is based upon its' rarity, availability and condition. We should also know that the A.W. ban will only get more restrictive and the only way to keep the new legislation from creating a nation full of criminals would be to grandfather or confiscate. Personally I believe they will continue the grandfathering because confiscation would result in major constitutional challanges as well as enrage the public.

I think I can safely say that in the coming 2 years some will see the big picture and some wont, but the ones who do see it will invariably be rewarded for their vision. Consider that right now a post ban bushmaster AR-15 can be purchased for $600, that same manufacturers' AR-15 as a PreBan is $1800, that is a %300 percent increase in value. They are basicly the same firearm sans the flash hider and collapsable stock. Now I'm not being a smart * but where else can you get that kind of a return on an investment. Long ago before 1994 , the writing was on the wall and many people bought who have since been justly rewarded.

Make no mistake, this A.W. ban will NEVER sunset and a $1200 PreBan SP1 AR-15 today, may very well become a $2500 Sp1 a couple of years from now.

Next I expect to see A.W.'s under the same control as fully automatic weapons.

Dances with Sheeps, You believe American's should make a stand and keep the Timothy Mcvey's of this country at bay? I bet all you know, or will ever know about Timothy Mcvey is that he bombed a Federal Building that killed many innocent people including children and was found guilty of it and executed.
He didn't use a gun for his crime, was not a high profile person to refuse renting a truck to, an ole farm boy buying diesel and fertilizer isn't out of the ordinary. You go ahead and keep denying American's what ever you want. The people who cause trouble are smarter than you and will not be able to be picked out of a crowd.
Anyway's I thank Timothy Mcveigh for one thing, kicking Saddam Hussein's but in the Gulf War. He was the best of the best shooting the tanks and earned the respect of his peers, someone you would of done anything for....He was shipped straight from the Deserts of Saudi and Iraq after fighting a long battle to the States with no rest to try to qualify for Special Forces...his dream. He was beat up, dehydrated and had no chance in passing the qualifications which led to the total mental breakdown that led him to be anti-government. He has changed Army policy anyways. I blame the U.S. Army for mentally destroying that soldier, but you will only remember him as a baby killer and a domestic terrorist.

I'm not a promoter of killing any American or any person for any reason. I'm just ticked off that no one knows Jack about why things happen in this world and how the media 'edits' things.

Jesus F. Christ, if all we care about at this point is whether assault weapons are a good investment, we deserve to lose the battle of the sunset. This press release was placed for anti-gun publicity by Amy Stilwell of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. It is true that those elected in November will have a lot to do with whether this ban sunsets or not. It is not true that this is going to be automatic, given the post-9/ll climate about citizens defending themselves. We have achieved great strides in terms of CCWs. What we have to do is campaign our elected representatives, and those to be elected, to let them know we want the right to own black rifles. The same ban that prevents further domestic production of fine weapons like the AK and Uzi also prevents magazines of more than 10 rounds, and certain of the pre-ban black rifles. They also artificially drive up prices, but this is only one of the issues that make these guns less available than they should be to law-abiding Americans. Come on people, let's keep our eye on the ball!

if we only care about the value of our prebans, we don't deserve the right to keep them. Greed is a very evil thing.
