NAMES....

I have seen a few posts lately that leave me wondering about the mentality and age of the author..Most of you already know how I feel about the subject, but it bears repeating..

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO RESORT TO NAME CALLING???

Does it make a person feel more like a man to call someone names? Feel important? Feel superior in intellect?
Can you not debate the subject in question with facts?.. When I was on the debating team, we had to know a list of subjects inside out, as we didnt know what side we were going to be on till the day of the debate... you had to be able to argue both sides...
When I see someone post a subject, state their opinion and then call someone else names because they dont agree with the author, it puts me in mind of 2 year olds..
I realize this a rather trivial posting and will end up in all probability being flamed.. But when I see adults with average or above average intelligence resorting to name calling to get their point across, it leaves me wondering how they get the point across in the real world ....
It seems when we get an influx of new members we go thru this "bit" of name calling... We outgrew that "bit" years ago...

    Amen, I do not post as often as some, but I have been here since Oct'99 and seen them come and go. Those who stoop to the trenches of guttaral (sp?) language go more often then stay. Some have been reformed. Each of us contributes a different perspective and provides a good bit of entertainment and enlightenment. On occasion a profane word makes a point, name calling makes a point on someone's head and labels that person as unable to articulate themselves intelligently.

    BR, part of it is the "culture" in other areas, such as Bullz' beloved HCT, where some folks enjoy displaying their knowledge of gutter talk. After such conditioning, it takes a while - for those who stay - to adjust to an adult site that is for mature audiences . . . that characterization being given its literal meaning, not as a euphimism for tasteless activities. This is also true of the personal attacks which, as I'm sure you know, are considered a high art form in many venues. I tend to ignore such as indicative of the character of the poster. I admit I an impulse to go off the reservation myself sometimes, but I do try to rein the inclination. I know I can do a far better job with a flame thrower than most who choose that road but it isn't worth the effort.

    Hello Black Roses,

    I agree with you tenfold, I too have a background in debate, and we were instructed by our coach in no uncertain terms that we were to debate the idea not the person.

    The lack of netiquette is obvious. The flame warrior mentality is in evidence. My own thought is that sitting behind the console emboldens them and they express what they feel , but would not say in person.

    I've encountered this behavior to a greater or lesser degree at just about every forum I have visited. Trolls constitute a nuisance tax. They eventually go back under the bridge. They don't exchange ideas and opinions with people that acutally have them.

    Clouder and Shootist.....X-Rings! (notice only one exclamation point instead of my normal three?) Is there a chance we will see the forum return to the days of old in which manly men mounted their noble PC steeds and rode forth with quills to battle witless knaves; eschewing swords as beneath them? Will we see fair maidens run to the defense of the knaves and castigate the quillborne warriors for assailing said knaves? Will we again see Beach and Saxon Pig sling verbal arrows at one another until they both simultaneously collapse from the accumulated hits? Will we ever see salzo score on the fair maidens in the bowling alley again? Will we ever again see the screen melt from Clouder's acrid comments to the hoi polloi? I fear not...that day is past....there will be no TLynne to rise with righteous indignation and call me a "liberal"(even now my heart bleeds from that deep wound). Saxon and I long ago buried our hatchets. salzo will always have to wonder what those maidens would really have done to him in the car in the bowling alley parking lot. And clouder you come here to infrequently anymore to keep us honest on a daily basis. Instead we have the "asterisk ninjas" who terrify the population with their nasty words cleverly disguised with a few ****'s.     I had to leave other boards when the name calling takes over the original post or stops me from getting an intelligent answer to a question or one by another member that I would also like to hear the answer to. Then the board just seems to be a place to insult each other with a keyboard instead of face to face, that is if there was really any reason to do so. I left all that in the sand box with my tonka toys.

    But i will tell you one thing i never took debate in school.
    But it kind of gets under your skin when some fool yes i said fool.
