Steubenville, Ohio-AP -- A woman in Ohio is facing felony charges for allegedly letting her three children get severely sunburned.

The sheriff says the kids looked like they had been "dipped in red paint."

He says Eve Hibbits took her two-year-old daughter and ten-month-old twin boys to the Jefferson County Fair last week. Police pulled her aside when they noticed how red and burned the kids' faces were.

The kids had second-degree sunburns and were treated with cold compresses.

Hibbits faces three counts of child endangerment.

She remains behind bars, with bond set at 15-thousand dollars

I guess they should have arrested my mother too. She would let me play outside and I would get sunburned pretty bad sometimes.

If I knew then, what I know now.

If she had left a pan of water boiling on the stove, and they dumped it on themselves, is that any different?

2nd degree burns isn't much, but it is pretty clear that she is an idiot.

Frankly, I'm tired of idiots. They need to be punished.

She is/was and will be in the future, negligent. Sunscreen should have been used and re-applied as necessary. I have been burned, and it is not only painful, but at a young age like that, it increases the risk on skin cancer. She has ceratinly increased their risks with second degree burns. Like it or not, that is negligence. Since the children are dependent upon her for their well being and safety, how can it be anything but.

Sucsrcreen w/ a SPF of 45 will do it, it still needs to be applied and then re-applied as necessary. Hats are also a good idea. People do not seem to think of the sun and the damage it does untill it is too late. I know.

Some people are allergic to sunscreen.... What this mother did is nowhere near what others have done leaving the kids in the car... A sunburn is not always evident until much later...

Every parent should be charged with the same thing as she was, kids are allowed to play outside every day.... ooooooops.. we better put teachers in that category as well... charge them... charge any adult that allows children to play outside...Gone too far?... I think so..

Obviously you do not understand the implications of a second degree sunburn on young children or light skinned people. Since she was GOING TO BE OUTSIDE, COMMON KNOWLEDGE, OR HOW ABOUT COMMON SENSE, would lead one to put on sunscreen BEFORE going out. Common sense, a thing of the past, or maybe it is easier to say, she forgot. Gone too far, I THINK NOT. She is supposed to be responsible for their safety and well being, both now and hopefully later, but hey, she already pushed em out so her part must be done right. A young child is responsible for their own safety and upbringing, not the parents, right or wrong?

If the kids were older, I'd be more inclined to support the woman. C'mon - 10 months? After there had been other complaints about her child care? Poor kid has no clue why his/her face hurts so bad. What competent parent exposes a child that young to so much sun they get second degree burns? None. It does seem like Big Brotherism, but when would she have taken care of them - when they had sun stroke or worse? Most of the time the state has no beeswax in the parent-child relationship, but then some people should not be allowed to have children, either.

I would have to know all the facts before I say any thing.I recall several bad sunburns as a youngster-teen age YRS at the pool. And I was far from being Mistreated or neglected.I thank God for the Parenting I recieved.I also got my share of the old Hickory switch to.I guess that would be abuse today.I never got one I didnt deserve and deserved more than I got.

Actually the County officials and Fair promoters should be arrested for "reckless endangerment".

They knew that the sun was going to be out; they knew people would be exposed to the sun; they didn't provide enough tented and awning areas so that people would be out of the sun!

They are just trying to evade their responsibilities in this matter and trying to focus all the blame on the mother.

Somebody get this lady a lawyer! She needs to file some lawsuits!

I heard an interview with the sheriff on the radio today. He said the mother is "a little slow" and he said Family and Children Services had run ins with her before. The father of the 3 kids was running a ride at the carnival and the mother was out there all day to be near the father. They asked the mother why she didn't use sunscreen and she said she didn't know what that is. The kids didn't have shirts on and no hats. The sheriff said mom has been in jail for 7 days and will get out today. Neither he nor the county attorney wants mom to get any more jail time. The sheriff said he thought 7 days in jail was a good "wake up call".

    Harlee,
No, not everyone is an idiot, but certainly a HUGE percentage of the population is.

Come on............THINK here. The woman let BABIES get sunburned!

Would you be so lenient if she had left them in the backyard by themselves and got burnt? No.....you wouldn't. You'd be up in arms about it.

The woman is negligent, and a poor mother.

There are PARENTS, and there are PEOPLE WITH KIDS. They aren't the same!

Whether she did it on purpose, or it 'just happened' to the kids - either way, she is still responsible for her children. There is a thing called SUNBLOCK in these modern times that can prevent things like this. So, even if she didn't intend to let it happen - it is called NEGLECT when she allowed it to happen.

quote:No one was there from here how can you judge a mother do you think she is smiling in jail?????

She's probably not smiling because she is IN jail - not because of what she did to get there.

So, you are saying that any punishment requires intent by the guilty party? C'mon... Slow or not, I don't think there is any excuse for letting someone get away with something like this.

Well, since the arresting officer said that the kids looked like they had been 'dipped in red paint' - I'm guessing that it was pretty obvious there and then, that the kids were getting pretty toasty.

Again - if she has mental problems, that would help the general public understand WHY she allowed it to happen, but it can't be excused because of that. If she's not able to take care of her kids sufficiently, perhaps they should worry more about taking custody of them, rather than putting her in jail.

I guess putting her in jail takes care of two birds with one stone, though, heh. :)

With the way things are today, I think she should get a really good lawyer and sue the automotive industry for contaminating the atmosphere with so many contaminants that the ozone layer has been depleted, enough to burn her children without the use of SPF protection. Watch, some lawyer probably already thought of this.

    Sue the sun!
Who in the hell let the sun out without the saftey on?
I think the sun should have a sun-beam lock on it so kids won't get hurt!
Maybe she didn't read the "parental advisory" label on the sun.
Was this in the south? Great, more rednecks!

Yea, we heard all about this today!

It seems that there is more than one breed of parent.I remember the ones that reminded you "It's time to come in and get a sweater on" or"sit up straight, don't slouch","dont run with that pencil!" "make sure you hold your brothers hand crossing the street" "put some of this bug repelant on" "don't sit so close to the TV" etc. I guess there are some parents who don't. No big deal, right?

Okay, how about this... what if someone was babysitting your three kids, and they took them to the fair and let them get burnt to a crisp, with 2nd degree burns on their faces? You wouldn't be mad? You wouldn't want to take some action? You don't think that is neglectful? I hope you folks don't have kids.
