HAS THIS BEEN COVERED BEFORE? WHY DID THE MILITARY CHOOSE THE .223
OVER THE 222mag. THEY ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL?

Basically from what I've read, its because not only did the .222rem. mag not come out till a year later, but the .223rem was the caliber the AR-15 was designed to shoot, and they bought the rifle, the cartridge just met the standards, it was the rifle that sold the cartridge.

The magnum actually started its life as an experimental military cartridge. When the army didn't adopt it, it was released as a commercial round in 1958. The 223 (released in 1964) ended up as the military round because it was specifically designed for the AR. Because they're so similar ballistically, it seems like the magnum was a case of just being ahead of the times.

As I remenber the AR 16, .223 started out as the Stoner Designed AR 10 .308. I think I read womething like that quite a few years back.
