My gun buddies....someone looking for a Scar17

I have been looking around for a friend of mine. He is with the police. I cannot for the life of me reason out WHY the department makes them buy their own weapons....but they do....so we are on the hunt.

He is looking into the Scar17 because he is on the drug task force, wants something that will penetrate a car door (like a 308), folds down nice and short, and he wants to put a silencer on it (so he likes the gas system of the Scar.)

Who else has all of these features? Doesn't Sig?

Are we limited to the Scar17? I'm not finding many options for him.

I suggest that you refer him to a Class 3 dealer (who is also a Class 3 repair facility).

First, he will want to get his LE FET discount, & I'm guessing you won't want to do the paperwork.

Second, I think he has unrealistic expectations; he needs a professional who has installed suppressors for LEA's to give him his options.

Sorry Locust Fork but I have a question.
Are all police officers allowed to use
automatic weapons or do they need the proper
    licensing?
I'd really hate to think some of the officers
in towns I've lived in were allowed to do so.

He is just looking into options right now. He knows he loves the Scar17.....and he will be able to get the silencer added later. I didn't know if there was something he may not realize is out there....

I just want to be sure he knows all of the options before I get his one of these....

I have been looking around, but I don't see anything that has all of the features that he likes about these rifles.

Does the department make them buy their own weapons or just those that are not issue weapons?

Johnny SWAT team wants a full auto SCAR that penetrates car doors. The good thing is it also penetrates apartment and house doors so they can bypass all of the risk associated with a no-knock home invasion.

Sit out in the street and hose the entire house from the comfort of your cruiser. [xx(]

Since when is this gun fully-auto?

He'll shoot an engine to disable a car, ya dig?

I see NOTHING wrong with this officer's choice of weapon.

If you guys can't help her, how about your refrain from the stupid comments?

    Edit:

It's not that I don't love you guys (a bit of sarcasm), but I'm shocked at the stupid comments you're making about the SCAR 17. If he wants this, so what? Would it bug you guys if he wanted to use an HK91? Wait a minute, it's black as well. [:D]

I'm just looking for any options that also fit his needs so he knows what choices he has.

He likes the gas system of the Scar...because you can adjust it to shoot the sub sonic rounds (because he is planning on getting a silencer.) He wants the silencer only because he wants to keep his hearing and if you ever have to fire something like this indoors you would agree a silencer would be a good thing.

He likes the 308 round....because he has had a gun pulled on him TWICE from people inside cars he has stopped on drug busts.

He likes that the Scar is short...with the folding stock. If you can picture having this thing strapped to hang at your chest and needing to get it up to be able to fire quickly....along with traversing through a building....you just do not have the option of having a full length rifle in this situation.

There are so many things out there.....I was just trying to make sure there isn't another "thing" he should check out before he buys the Scar.

SIG makes the SIG716 in 7.62Nato. It's gas/piston operated. I don't believe it is available with a folding stock, however.

They also make the 556R which is chambered for 7.62x39. Some folks say that offers more penetration than the 5.56 but from what I've looked at, it's a bit of a toss up.[:I]
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

It is available to some in full-auto, and the OP did not suggest that he was looking for a semi-auto.

I don't really care if he wants it for personal use, more power to him.

Will do....its looking like the Scar is about all we have that will fill his needs. I can't believe there isn't another short 308 gas operated rifle....but I guess there aren't???

No, there are. But, they aren't that much cheaper.

FAL and the M1A are gas operated, but, after watching this video, I'd pay the extra money for the SCAR 17S.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXJCmeX-5Tg

AFAIK, the 17S is the civilian semi-auto version of this rifle. The MK17 is a full-auto, title II, weapon.

Personally, I love this rifle: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=298611548#PIC But, it's not too much cheaper, and, IIRC, it came out in the 50's. Off-hand, I can't remember when the FAL came out, exactly. But, it's no SCAR 17S, that's for sure. [:)]

this is a better choice(sig 716) than the scar

better than either would be one of the 5.56 or 7.63X39 options but if he wants a 14 pound call of duty weapon, sell him something $$$$

Has he ever shot up a car with 5.56? ancedotal internet chatter aside, it is plenty powerful as a indiviual weapon

How do you figure? Less recoil? Lessor OAL? More accurate? Easier to maintain? I'm lost, help me out.

$2,500 is a lot of $$. But, if you want the best, at the moment, that's what you have to pay.

Kasey, .308 sub-sonic rounds? Are these commercially available? The .308's very much a hyper-sonic round, and I just can see loading it to travel less than 1100 FPS. But, what do I know?

Oso is right. And, it gets a lot more complicated.

If your friend does not need subsonic, he will experience increased recoil (because the muzzle brake has to be removed to mount the suppressor). I don't know what kind of recoil spring the SCAR has, but it will need to be altered or replaced because a can will change the recoil impulse. Too much recoil causes parts breakage, too little & it won't cycle.

If he needs subsonic in a .30 cal, rounds must be drastically downloaded; performance will be poor & the rifle must be manually operated.

    It's all physics.

I am passing along all the info I can to him. I just want him to know of all the options before he puts his money in something.

I am pretty sure he is sold on the scar....now to find the "deal" for him.

I STILL can't believe the department doesn't buy them the equipment they need!

I havent shot or owned the SCAR, but the Sig 716 also has the adj piston that is ideal for suppressing, and while it dosent have all the hype behind it it is just as handy for $1700
and it is more accurate from the feedback i have read/heard
    its also $1000 cheaper
My suppressor guy loves the sig. its features for the money are the best in a .308
I have the mws (stainless one that is just as expensive as the scar) and i wish it had the gas system, but it is much more accurate (its a little heavy also)

subsonic heavy .308 is available, and will not cycle any of these, its for quiet over everything. a suppressed rifle is better indoors (with one of those tiny cans on a SBR .223), but the .308 is more than an objective person would probally choose for doing raids and warrants in apartments

I was saying/implying that this guy seems caught up in having the biggest and baddest so much that he is overlooking what would actually be better served with a plain m-4 type in .223

The SCAR is a great weapon system, so if it is available, I don't see one reason not to get it. I, too, question the need for .308 just to bust through car doors (the 5.56 has armor piercing rounds that perform that function VERY well), but whatever. All I will say is that if I had lots of money to throw around I'd have both the 16s and the 17s in my collection.
