It does not look like you can take the base plates off, like they are welded on?!?

Why would someone do that?

Look to me like a cobbled-together bunch of parts. They really ruined some Colt mags, if they aren't mixed manufacture.

While the welding job is poor quality. The fact that the base plates are not removable is no problem what so ever . To install follower just install. then use wood clothes pin or pencil to ppust spring about 1/3 the way down slide paper clip through both sides of the top or next to the top holes . remove cloths pin or pencil then just install follower and slide paperclip out. All WW I & WW II magazines had bottoms that were fixed.

I thought EVERYONE knew this. When I was a little kid, an old Girine showed me how to break down a .45 mag with a stick and a nail.
