18 Killed in German School Shooting

By JOCHEN WIESIGEL
.c The Associated Press

ERFURT, Germany (April 26) - An expelled student opened fire inside a school Friday in eastern Germany in a shooting spree that claimed at least 18 lives and wounded at least six others, police said.

The 19-year-old former student, who was kicked out of school several weeks ago, was among those killed, who police said were mostly adults but included at least two children. Police commandos conducted a room-to-room search of the building, where at one point during the rampage students were trapped.

That's sickening. It's also more ammo for the anti gun jerks.

What gets me is they are forgetting to say that Germany has some of the strictist gun controls. Gun control isn't going to solve this problem. If anything that was proven today.

Maybe if one (or more)of those 13 teachers who were shot to death had the right to carry a firearm all would be alive to talk about it today. When you ban firearms only the criminals will have them.

ERFURT, Germany - In a scene reminiscent of the horror at Columbine High School three years ago, a recently expelled student clad all in black roamed with two guns through the halls of a school here Friday, killing 17 people before shooting himself dead as German commandos closed in.

The 19-year-old's victims included two girls, as well as 10 men and five women. Six others were reported injured.

The death toll exceeded the April 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., where teenage gunmen Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 13 people before committing suicide, and matched that of a 1996 shooting at an elementary school in Dunblane, Scotland, where 16 children, a teacher and the gunman died.

At Johann Gutenberg Gymnasium, the gunman, who was kicked out of the school several weeks ago, fired at random with a handgun and another weapon, apparently a shotgun, police said. The dead were found lying in hallways and bathrooms, they said.

"We found a horrible scene when we searched the building," police spokesman Manfred Etzel told N-TV television.

Friday: Journalists stand in front of the Johann Gutenberg high school in Erfurt, eastern Germany.
As police closed in, the gunman shot himself in a classroom where he was barricaded. Among those killed were at least two teachers and a policeman who was one of the first to charge into the building after a janitor called for help at about 11 a.m.

After searching the building, police said they could not confirm students' accounts that there was a second gunman.

When the shooting began, hundreds of students from grades five through 12 were in the school in Erfurt, about 150 miles southwest of Berlin in former East Germany.

During the rampage, a handwritten sign reading "HILFE" - Help - was pasted to a fourth-floor window, and the face of a girl could be seen through a window.

Shocked students who fled the scene reported seeing a man dressed all in black roaming the hallways with a gun.

"I heard shooting and thought it was a joke," said 13-year-old Melanie Steinbrueck, choking back tears. "But then I saw a teacher dead in the hallway in front of Room 209 and a gunman in black carrying a weapon."

"The guy was dressed all in black - gloves, cap, everything was black," said Juliane Blank, 13. "He must have opened the door without being heard and forced his way into the classroom."

"We ran out into the hallways. We just wanted to get out," she said.

Sixth-grader Martin Streng said he was in math class when he heard gunfire coming from a classroom down the hall. As he and other students filed into the hallway to flee the building, they saw a man with a gun down the corridor behind them, Streng said.

Outside the school, a police officer with a megaphone urged parents to register their children's names before leaving the scene. Groups of dazed and shocked students huddled in the street, hugging and crying. Ambulances and police cars massed in front of the school.

It was Germany's second school shooting in recent months. In February, a 22-year-old German who recently lost his job, shot and killed two former bosses and his old high school's principal in a rampage outside Munich.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The gun banners want to eliminate ugly guns like assault weapons. They don't think of grandads old double barrel quail gun as evil. But these school shooters love the shotgun, at close range it is awesome.

This is tragic, and a shame, and I'm sure anti-gunners will twist it every way they can to further their cause( and get all the air-time they want). It's such a shame that in all the name calling that will come from this we won't hear too many voices calling for a movement to change the way we deal with our children, we would rather attack the symptom and ignore the disease. I have to admit to alot of prejudice here, I beleive in the traditional family unit, Christian values, that raising good, well adjusted kids is more important than my net worth. Time on my knees is more important than overtime. I take my kids to church every Sunday(not just send them on the church bus). We are a selfish, self-centered society, and would rather blame some inanimate object for our failures than ourselves. Oh well, down off my soapbox.

I just listened to an account of this on the radio. It sounds like the German cops used the same tactics as the SWAT team used at Columbine. Gather around out front and wait 'till the shooting stops before you go in.
