I have been hunting deer in NY with handguns since legalized in 1981. I have successfully utilized several guns and calibers. TC Contender has been my favorite for years. 35 remington loaded with Sierra 170 JHP can hardly be beat. 1" goups at 100 are common place. Deer pile with one shot.7 international rimmed, 7 tcu, 357 Maximum have all been used successfully. That 35 remington still gets my nod.Anyone else have suggestions, comments, pet calibers etc?

gunnut, are you of the light/fast or heavy/slow school of thought? I tend to use 180 HP's in the 44. Shot 1 deer with 240Gr JHP but not really impressed with performance.

Well guess im in the slow crowd. In the 44mag I used 240grn HP, In the 357 if memory serves me right they were 158grn. Both droped in their tracks. I also took a deer with a Ruger 77/44 with the 240grns this year at about 60yrds. He droped also. I normally don't hunt with the 357, however I had it in a shoulder hoster, after lowering my rifle to the ground to get out of the stand I noticed him coming my way. Rather than tring to pull my rifle up I opted to use the 6in python.

Here in Illinois, we also are prohibited from using necked cartridges. I hunt with a 6" Colt Anaconda .44 Magnum with a Tasco PPII red dot sight.

BlackHawk in 41 mag with 250 or 265 vgrain cast bullets over 21 or 22 grains of H110 for Musk Ox. 430 JDJ in T/C Contender with 49 grains of H322 under a 325 grain cast bullet for moose.25 grains of H110 under a 370 grain cast bullet in 45 Colt, Blackhawk for moose. This is a five shooter, so don't try this load in a six shooter unless it is in a 454 chamber.
