All these movies are on my must have list for a video collection. They all have a strange, out of the ordinary feel to them. No doubt there are others that are just as strange in a good way, but this is what I thought of first.
Straw Dogs (the original)
Dr Strangelove
Being There
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Clockwork Orange
Catch 22
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Slaughterhouse Five
Stranger Than Fiction

No sex, violence, or panoramic views. Just a very intense character movie with a somewhat plausible premise. You can Google it for the synopsis.

the devils advocate
The Light Horsemen - A film about a World War I light horse unit involved in the 1917 Battle of Beersheeba.
I loved "The Gods must be crazy". I was going to mention that there was a sequal but I discovered that there were a total of four. I have only seen one but it was also very good. Now I will have to see if I can find the other three.
The first one was the best. The second one is also very good. I had no idea there were more. I'll keep an eye out for them.
Man on Fire
League of Their Own
Remember the Titans
We Are Marshall
The Original King Kong
The Color Purple
We Were Brothers
Blackhawk Down
End of Days

If I was doing a general all time favorite list of movies that were done well or just had a great story-line or character development many of the other movies mentioned would be on my list as well. That would be a much longer list and also fun to compile.
