His life is wrecked, but he did it to himself. Should have stayed in the car until the dog's owner came back to the house. (There I go, using the "S" word!)

Deputy fired after he shoots Rains County family's farm dog

RAINS COUNTY -- Former Rains County Sheriff's Deputy Jarrod Dooley gave a very emotional interview Friday, days after a controversial shooting where he shot a beloved family dog.

Dooley wiped away tears as he tried to explain why he shot Candy, a 2-year-old blue heeler.

"I tried, but I didn't think I could get away from her," he said, pausing to compose himself. "I told her to get back, she wouldn't get back... And I fired two shots."

Dooley said he is a dog lover himself, and once worked for the SPCA. He said when he first drove up to a farm in Point, Texas, on a burglary call, Candy was not acting aggressive, so he got out of the car.

He said that's when Candy came at him, and that he didn't want to shoot her. He described the moment he told the dog's owner, Cole Middleton, he had shot Candy.

"[I said] 'Before we start, you dog charged me, and I had to shoot her...' And he got upset, which is understandable -- I'd be upset if it was my dog," the former deputy said through tears. "I love mine like he's my son. I tried to calm [Cole Middleton] down, it wasn't workin'."

The shooting has sparked outrage across the world after Cole Middleton took his story to social media and released a video. It shows other officers mugging for the camera just after the shooting.

Dooley, who is a single father, said he and his son have received death threats.

"I can't go to the grocery store without being recognized, pointed at, laughed at," Dooley said. "Can't pay my water bill without hearing my name, saying 'There's the sorry cop that killed the dog.'"

Dooley was fired and his life has been turned upside down. He said he can't change what happened, but feels for the owner's loss.

"I wish I could take his hurt away," Dooley said. "I can't begin to imagine how bad it hurt. I hear her yelp every night before I go to bed. There's probably not a minute that goes by that I don't think about it. I'd give anything to walk up to him, hug his neck, try to make his pain go away. I know I'll never get that chance."

Dooley said he doesn't intend to sue over his termination. He just wanted to speak to News 8 to tell his side of the story.

I bet he is sorry, his life is wrecked and he brought it on himself. I'd like to know why it never apparently occurred to him to use OC Spray? It seems to me that if he's been bitten before, and sees a dog running loose he'd have his OC Spray out in his hand in the event he needed, but rather he chose to use deadly force. As pointed out previously mailmen and water meter readers deal with this on a daily basis without the benefit of killing the animal.

I feel sorry for his kid having to reaps the rewards of his father, I bet school is hell for him. This poor basterd is going to have to move if he wants any peace. I can only imagine how scared this man is right now, he probably feels cornered with little to no support. He's in for worse ride than Zimmerman.

bet he is be sorry but had there been no public outcry it would nave been business as usual...Everybody is sorry when they get caught doing wrong..hopefully the taunting laughing thugs will get theirs also,,,,i have had dobermans, shepherds and little dogs etc charge me when out walking ..just stop and face them..dont run dont be jumping around like a little girl.....they will stop if you yell in a stern loud voice is my experience... and i am not taking about a trained attack dog when an owner tells them to attack..just to clarifiy

What a sorry POS, this worthless piece of slime is only sorry that he lost his job. I hope that he spends the rest of his life just like he is in the video. [:(!]

they sure go wild when one of their k-9,s gets shot and the shooter gets jail time for shooting them, but when they shoot a dog without reason, you had better have a video or others seeing the act or they walk. my mailman carries some kind of spray(i don,t know what it is) but he claims he has used it several times over the years and says the sprayed dogs could not even bite their own * let alone him. according to T.S. albert, one of the i don,t get it crowd.

Funny how he didn't seem so remorseful in the video when he was around all his buddies.[xx(]

Pretty sorry to threaten his son's life, if that's true. The kid probably having to suck it up because of Dad too.

Who pays their water bill in person?

If this had not gone viral, the cop would be at the water cooler laughing with the cop buddies how he shot the big bad dog. Dog probaly had 3" teeth in his story.

Now, time to remove the DPS officers who were playing grab * instead of being profession.

I believe it's possible to get yourself into a situation where you have to shoot a dog, but I believe it's rare, or should be. Anything that's possible will happen. There are way too many times for all or most of them to be legitimate. Maybe a few.

I don't think shooting the dog was necessary, but even if I gave him that point, after mortally wounding the dog and not finishing it is unforgivable.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

That was pretty pathetic. I hope they get hammered for that. They are supposed to be the most respected law enforcement in the state and that trooper that was smiling and waving at the cameras needs to get reassigned to working crowd control on Oak Lawn.

I had a german shepard junk yard watchdog try and rip my throat out at ten years old.

Being along with my dad as a customer and had been petting him a few times.

As soon as the owner went inside the dog came up to me and went for the throat.Grabbed it mid air and moved the jaws away from my juglar.
It proceeded to open up my forearm so I choked it to death.

That dog needed to be shot.

That said, critters cant see a badge so common sense should have prevailed.[V]

    Just like people
    some are good
    some are bad.

If you had already choked it to death, what purpose would it serve to shoot it?

Where do these police agencies find these physical specimens? Young, short, fat, bald, scared of dogs, cries like a baby in front of the camera. As a police officer I am embarrassed.

How does anyone shoot a dog in the back of the head and claim he was coming for me? (exit wound right eye)

I am not going to defend this cop, but it could happen. Small excited dogs jump around all over. One second he could have been facing the cop, the next second his head could be turned away as he was jumping around. Excited dogs and scared cops are a bad mix.

I wouldn't shoot any dog unless he had its mouth wrapped around my leg. A human not so much.
