Be careful of leaving your car in the hot sun with the GPS able to heat up.
175F it seems is an extreme limit and enough to cause the battery to explode, catch fire, and destroy your car.

The batteries in question are Lithium Ion and this article is specific to GPS.
However, I suspect no batteries do well in extreme heat and I would include any portable electronic devices in the list:
Such as an iPod, camera, cell phone, computer, iPad, etc.

If you have to leave a portable device in your car. Position it in the vehicle as low as is possible.
Heat rises and the temperature near the floorboard is much less than the dashboard or higher.
If at all possible vent the heat from your car by slightly opening a couple of windows, etc.

And better yet, remove the device and keep it out of the sun.
