Paronoid or cautious.

I think going on a cruise right now is not a good idea. My wife says I'm paronoid- I say I'm cautious. After yelling at me about being afraid to go- I still can't help but think about my young kids, and the danger I may put them into by making this trip. If something happened and my kids lives were in danger- then paranoid would turn into reality, I don't want to leave this country and leave the fate of my family in the hands of those who would rather make a profit than to tell me the truth- that this is a risky trip! This is a time of war against terrorism and not being afraid will not protect you from the affects. I am not afraid- just cautious. That is what we call survival! What does it take to let those who haven't been directly affected by the 9-11 attacks, that we are all at risk if we leave this country . No reason to step in the cows * if you can walk around. Besides- I've been to the Bahamas, cancun, and the like- it is nice but not worth the $$. I want to see more of the U.S.A.! How many of you now, would go out of this country on purpose. (without a gun).

Hey Daddo, don't worry. Yes, the possibility exists that you might run into trouble overseas. And, you might run into trouble here. You just don't know and there really isn't any legitimate reason to not travel. My family and myself travel frequently and we haven't stopped because of 9/11 and the war against terrorism. While I think it is always important to be alert when in an unfamiliar environment, I think you're robbing yourself if you choose to change your plans just because of what MIGHT happen.Plus, if you're going on a cruise you'll probably spend a great deal of time in the water anyway... Daddo, I can't give you any advice on whether or not you should go on your trip, but I was struck by the way you think about your children. So many people bring children into this world and then do not care enough about them.I saw it all the time as an LEO, children negeleted, abandoned, and abruised by uncaring "parents."I'm proud to know you, my friend (even if only on-line.) People like you and your family are the very backbone of our country.Enjoy yourself if you decide to go, you already made my day!-Charlie

daddo,I'd bet "safety" has nothing to do with this; I'd suspect your "concerns" mask other issues.Women like to spend money for "experiences"; men like spend money and get "stuff".Your wife is thinking about the experience (and memories) she could have on a cruise with you; you're thinking about all the guns you could buy with the money you'd spend on the cruise.Put the "paranoia vs. caution" question to rest and try to work some sort of compromise.(Realistically, you'd probably run a greater chance being a victim of crime traveling to a major US city, than on the cruise--just know where you're going and use your "street smarts" when you get there.)[This message has been edited by competentone (edited 01-26-2002).]

I think a trip via train plane or boat should be a real bargain right about now, considering everyones big push to get people to travel right now. I cant think of a better time. If you decide you dont want to go, and want to convince your wife the same, just go rent Titanic and watch it with your wife, see if she changes her mind.

If you plan on going anywhere abroad, or ever think you MIGHT go anywhere abroad, bookmark this address: http://travel.state.gov It's the US State Department's Consular Affairs page.Important information on tourism, laws, safety, crime, possible terrorism, etc. for every country in the world. Very extensive, and VERY useful.I like to read the files on places like The Congo or Rwanda now and then just to remind myself of why I really ought not to be bitching about the fact that a tank of gas, a burrito, and a Coke costs me $17.93

daddo, This is only the opinion of a NON-TERRORIST. having been on cruises before, I can tell you this, there are more likfe boates than people on board. A terrorist attack seems to depend on killing innocent people with no way of possible escape i.e.( planes, bombs etc). The cruise ship has provided a way of escape through the life boats as well as life vests. One can float and be found in hours by the coast guard or local shipping traffic. I would tend to beleive that of all travelling, this should be the safest at the time as I would think a different type of attack would serve their puposes better.Just my opinion. BTW, cruises kick a*s. No agendas, no timetables, no responsibility. Where ya goin?

Whats the difference ? Mujadim Saladim toasting your butt in a foreing country or Abdula the Butcher (From New York ) mugging you in yellowstone park ? Carry a bigger tire iron and some profesional grade throwing screwdrivers. ,you may also try and "old reliable" boxcutter (Collectively they are more intimidating than a magnum).HE HE HE !

Yes Dread, I can just picture the guy walking around with a tire iron and a beltful of sharpened screwdrivers, glaring at everyone that walks past.

To be fair to daddo's paranoia or caution, there was of course the Achille Lauro hijacking in 1985. But based on recent news stories, I think it's more likely that he'll get to some island and the cruise line will decide to go bankrupt before he gets back, or the ship will develop mechanical difficulties at sea. Then there's always the possibility of food poisoning, Legionnaire's disease, or an outbreak of ebola virus. Or he could just go with his family and have a good time living dangerously on a cruise ship, as opposed to driving safely at 70 MPH bumper-to-bumper on an interstate.

Carring a Screwdriver could be percieved as an instrument of burglary. Which is against the law, a law abiding citizen could get arrested depending on the attitude of the cop.
