WTB: Used Laptop Computer, Maybe

edited March 2002 in General Discussion
Several months ago, I had a hankering for another laptop and I posted a notice here. Well, a member responded with a very attractive deal and I let my wife talk me out of buying it. I don't remember who the member was, but the computer probably isn't available anymore.I broke a hinge on my old Sony laptop that I use every day, and would like to have it repaired, but the repair guys around here say it can't be done.If I can't get it fixed, maybe I can just buy another one and then sell the Sony as-is to someone who has lots of junk computers laying around to swap parts from. So, if you have something priced reasonable, let me know. I am looking for 500+ MHZ, 64+ meg RAM, 5+ gig hard drive. 1.44 and CD drive. Prefer DVD/CD burner.Anybody?

David, if no one here can help you, this is a factory website for reconditioned IBM systems: http://commerce.www.ibm.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce/CategoryDisplay?cntrfnbr=1&cgrfnbr=2047341&cgmenbr=1&cntry=840&lang=en_US And, much as I hate to mention it, such items are constantly offered on a very large politically correct auction site.

I believe t'was I, Mr. Nunn... Don't bother with the reconditioned unit as they'll have all the same problems any two or three year old laptop will have.See if the following makes any sense...Celeron 900 / 14.1" TFT Color / Speakers / MP3 / 128Mb SDRAM / 10Gb HDD / CDROM / Modem / 10-100 NIC / Windows XP.Upgrade to a DVD / CDRW / 20Gb HDD for very little extra.$999.00 plus minimal shipping.I believe you have my e-mail address. If not, just drop a short note here and I'll respond.Whatever you decide to do, I hope it works out well.

nunn, I use a laptop for work and am on it every day and it goes with me in my work truck. We use compaq and they have got to be the most unreliable piece of formed plastic on the market. I have been through 5 in the course of 3 years, and it is in a padded case when not in use. They have their use but I would really think hard before putting that much money into a laptop. Just my .02

Mr. Nunn -Ritchie has words of wisdom. Listen to him.Laptops have their place, but they aren't robust enough for hard work. Dell, HP, IBM ... It doesn't matter. A plastic hinge is a plastic hinge and that's that!Anything cheaper? I suppose there exists something less expensive, but I'm not sure you could afford it. Cheap and quality are mutually exclusive. They don't exist together. The machine I quoted is backed by a full warranty, not a 30 or 90 day joke. It's a commercial machine (as close as one can get in a portable). The reason for the low price is the Celeron CPU chip. It's perfectly fine for general applications, but probably a bit on the light side for complicated engineering applications. My guess is that it would be great for your purposes.Cheaper will almost certainly get you a used (reconditioned) unit with a limited warranty. Laptops aren't field serviceable as a rule. When they break you get to return them to the manufacturer. Think of that extra $200 to $300 as an insurance policy that will get you through the next two to three years.Happy St. Paddy's Day!

It isn't plastic. It is stamped steel, L-shaped, and it broke at the point of the L. I too have had crappy service out of Compaq but not other brands, so I would not judge all laptops as bad because I had a bad Compaq. Compaq is just junky stuff. My PD uses Panasonics and I dropped mine HARD on the parking lot and it works just fine.

Nunn,Needless to say, I deal in computer equipment as a profession. I'll be more than happy to send you to a site where you can purchase a $400.00 machine but I won't sell you one. I want to be able to use my name here on this board in the future. If you can obtain a repair part for your machine, do it. I you can't, please consider what I've shared with you as I'm not trying to sell a thing. All I can do is facilitate the purchase of a machine at dealer cost.Best Regards,Bruce R. Miller

nord, please email me. A new machine at cost is very intriguing. Long as it is not a Compaq.davidnunn@texoma.net

I bought a refurbished compaq laptop three years ago this past September. Only had one problem...the floppy drive died. Compaq sent me a shipping container over night, I packed it while the FedEx guy waited, and had it back in my hands 2 days later with a new floppy. Have used it every single day since, traveled all over the country with it, and it still chugs right along. Bought it for the grand price of $299, so have got more than a fair shake from it. As a matter of fact, looking for another right now. Have no problem buying refurbished, as long as it comes with a one year factory warranty.

Only question I have is... How did you break your Sony? I have had the same one since new, P-166, its been all over the east coast, west coast, and even to Texas. Been thru the mill, dropped off the bunk when I locked them down, stepped on when I forgot it was on the floor. Dropped from an elevated desk at about 10 feet to concrete floor. You name it, I have done it to it. (Except spill something on it, that's next) How did you break it????

I just opened it up one day and it broke.I have had nothing but bad experience with Compaq. My first computer was one. Lots of trouble and little support.Son had a Compaq laptop that went belly up out of warranty.Bought my mother a refurbished Compaq Internet Appliance. Supposed to have a year warranty. It quit first week. Mom called the support number and she was told there was no warranty and stop bothering us.My Sony was, and is a great computer. It just needs a hinge.I will keep a laptop, regardless of their supposed fragility. It is the only way I can have a computer that is MINE, and no one else messes with. I lean toward used units. Obsolescence seems to occur overnight with computers, so buying new is a waste of money.

Computer Shows are every oter week around here. You can buy used (definitely not state of art) for $200. You may not get what you want for the price that you want, but you can get something cheap to get by with until you find exactly what you want. I bought OFFICE 2000 PREMIUM ($800.00 software) for $150.00 (without box or book) legally at one of these shows.
