Lesson #7
SHOULD I HAVE A GUN?
I can't imagine a person not being concerned about their safety. There are a long list of things we can do to protect ourselves. That includes buying alarm systems, good locks, and living in a low crime area.
We can learn about how to avoid being a victim and how to prevent crime. A big step is the choice of a firearm for self-defense. It is not for everyone. It is important that you take a deep self-inventory of yourself to make that decision.
We have reports of people as young as 9 years of age using a firearm in legal self-defense and as old as 90+ years of age.
The criminals of our society prey on the old, infirm and weak. You don't find many body builders getting mugged. Few gun ranges are robbed and few pro-football players are mugged. Criminals will always go for a target they think is not a threat.
A gun has many perils to it. One is the legal cost of self-defense. That can run to about $10,000 if you do nothing wrong and over six figures in just legal fees if you make a mistake.
A gun is capable of incredible damage and making that decision can be one you may regret. That is why it is not only vital, it is mandatory to obtain the finest training. The NRA has a good basic self-protection course available in most areas. It is very basic, but it gives you a start on what to expect. There are basic gun safety courses that are also mandatory.
Safety and knowledge of legal issues is vital.
Few people will have difficulty pulling the trigger if a serious threat exists, but we preach it isn't all guns and bullets. It is a case of knowing WHEN to pull the trigger. You must know a wide range of issues to use self-defense.
You won't like what you read about the "rights" of the criminal and your limitations of your use of force. It is very restrictive and the fingers of the law will reach for you if you use lethal force.
Guns require more than average concern for safety and use. They require you to put out the money and the effort to practice and obtain the knowledge to use them.
One study claims the average gun owner fires less than one box of ammunition a year. I am sure that is true and may be less. If you want to buy a gun and put it in a drawer and leave it there, you should buy a large dog.
I tell new shooters that at least ONCE per month is not unreasonable. More often is not discouraged, and many find it an enjoyable sport with the frosting of self-defense. We encourage you to enjoy the safe and fun sport of shooting. It is indeed a family oriented activity and far less dangerous than many common activities like golf or tennis.
Talk over your choice with your family and ask them their opinion. We URGE you to share with them the options and choices.
Surf the web for information. There are plenty of good PC oriented sources for information. Some will seem confusing or conflicting, but you will find some very realistic common threads that will make sense to you. You can learn of the perils of legal problems and even criminal problems. You can find your state laws and read for yourself the issues.
You don't have to start off as Rambo. Visit some gun ranges near you and gun stores and ask questions.
Remember...Terrorist are attacking Civilians; Not the Government. Protect Yourself!
