LESSON #3
KNOW THY ENEMY
We constantly preach that self-defense isn't all guns and bullets. We stress legal concerns as a priority of course, but one of the most valuable sources of self-defense information is knowing the people that will attack you. To ignore that area is showing a real lack of reality.
I went to some Minnesota prisons and interviewed assorted killers and cop killers. One fellow I knew because I had arrested him. I faced him as he held a knife and said he would kill myself and several other officers. He would later stab a state trooper to death.
To understand self-defense you have to look at the term. It is self DEFENSE. Not Self-OFFENSE. You will only be able to respond if you DETECT a threat. That is the difficult part. It is a subject that some try to gloss over with, "know your surroundings" etc. It isn't that simple. It is a case of another human HUNTING you as prey.
Criminals will choose a target for a major reason that they think they can get what they want from YOU. Money, valuables, or even thrills. Criminals pick on those they think they can defeat. Age, size and other factors will be their guide to crime. That is why old women are frequent targets, or females and those with a disability.
A few years ago I "certified' a blind fellow in self-defense shooting. Much to my surprise and after a ton of critics claiming I was insane, I saw a report that a blind fellow (not my student) shot and killed an attacker on the street in another state. WAY TO GO! Hope some thugs got that message loud and clear. Not everyone is a target regardless of physical limitations.
How many professional wrestlers have you heard of being robbed or mugged? How many pro-football players have been mugged? Not many. You have to decide if you present a physical threat. That can even be defeated by numbers. Even a top athlete can be defeated by a multiple number of attackers.
When someone asks me to say what is the most effective crime prevention tools, I have a fast and well documented comment. LOCK YOUR DOORS!! Experts estimate as many as 80% or more of home burglaries are via an unlocked door and the majority are the front door.
It never ceases to amaze me how many burglary reports I took when someone just walked into the house with no effort, including at night.
Car jackings are common when thugs just yank the door open and take the car. It seems so simple, but crime prevention is a myth. It is crime RELOCATION. You avoid the crime and send it to a neighbor. It will still take place. If the house next door is locked, they may then move to try yours.
Granted some criminals will go to great lengths to enter a home or business, but most are rather simple affairs. We are a nation of $100,000 homes protected with $20 locks
