LESSON #4

PRIVACY

Many crimes can be related to a criminal knowing something about you. In some states a small fee of a few dollars will reveal who owns a car or the information on your drivers license. If possible, have your car registrations go to your business or employment address. In almost all states that is legal. Some will even accept a post office box. Some states even allow you to have your auto registration and drivers license information available to law enforcement only. Check this out and protect your identify.

On your personal checks females should never list their home address and phone number. Use a cell phone number or pager number or employment phone number. Remember, you are handing that check to TOTAL STRANGERS. You can also use things like employment addresses or even a place like Mail Boxes Etc. The bank can still send statements to your home.

Caller ID is vital for females or anyone in a position that phone threats can be a problem. It also documents who called, how often and when. Also many answering machines allow you to record conversations. A nice feature for when you get those ugly calls.

Be careful about having local newspapers or TV stations reporting on any collections you may have. This has been responsible for many burglaries. Also if you are going on vacation take the proper precautions and many thugs will watch obituary notices and break into homes of the families that go to the funeral.

In the phone book if you decide to list your number, many directories will allow you to list a number without an address. Also beware of putting your picture on business cards. Many females have taken to this and the real estate industry seems to be a popular source. Think about what you are doing. Are you selling houses or perhaps yourself by proxy? It is a dangerous practice.

In the vast majority of cases a burglary or theft from the home will be a result of information a criminal got from you or someone else that knows your movements. Such information passed on by kids and others can reach a criminal. That is why the old saying, "loose lips sink ships" is very true. Some crimes are indeed a result of luck and opportunity for the criminal. But most are a result of knowing certain information that leads them to your door.

If you collect guns or other items your reputation in that area can spread far and wide with little effort on your part. Ever toss a box from a new appliance, TV, VCR, or computer into the trash. That information can sure lead a criminal to your door. How about empty ammunition boxes or firearms related items including gun publications? Those are common methods of criminals to find out if you have what they want. Why make it easy?

We have a rental house. We had told the tenant to be careful because there had been burglaries around there. She was from a small town in Minnesota and could not accept that there was a different scene here in Atlanta, with the urban environment. She bought one of those huge 44 inch, whatever, tvs, a Panasonic I think. It cost $2200 she said. She put that box out on the street on Saturday and on Monday they kicked in the door and stole the tv [and 2 computers].

    Very good information.
Also you might want to consider what information you give to a bank, other than the bank where you have your accounts. Went in to cash a check at the bank that the check was drawn from. They asked me for a lot of information that was unnecessary for them to know. I refused to give them the information. I told the manager that there was no requirement other than to show my identicication, and that I was not interested in being on any more mailing lists. A short time later I was out the door with my cash.
