What is the issue with multiple gun registration and why should I avoid it. I have two guns coming this week.

I just went through that with 2 shotguns. It was not a hassel on my part. All they had to do was list both on the same yellow form, and still only one call in. Who is telling you it is hard, the dealer or another buyer? It may be a hassel on the dealers side, but I don't see how. Maybe someone here can explaine that!

I was told that the serial numbers are recorded and sent to the FBI. As if I'm trying to build a Quick Arsenal.

The only thing I know in regards to this issue is that the dealer must fill out a Multiple Handgun Purchase Form if you buy 5 or more handguns in a one week time frame. Never heard of this having to be done for 2 handguns if that is what you are buying.

All gun serial numbers and name of buyer go to NCIC. And all law enforcement (yes the FBI is sometimes considered law enforcement) has access to the information.

In Indiana, there is no calling in for permit holders. My dealer asks me to just use different dates on the yellow form. I've never considered myself paranoid, but anymore, I am going out of my way to find private owner transfers. We can do that here and there is no paper trail at all.

Just move to Iowa where there is no NICS check if you have a permit to purchase handguns!

The rule is 2 or more handguns in 7 days. I've had three of them filed on me in the last two years. They do notify the ATF that a multiple gun purchase has taken place, then it is up to the ATF whether or not to look into it. I have never been contacted.

Permit or no permit, NICS or no NICS, if you buy MORE THAN ONE handgun on any one business day, or within the same business week, the dealer MUST complete a Multiple Handgun Purchase form.

This once was a fairly harmless document. It recorded the name and address of the buyer, and the number and type of handguns purchased.

Now, the form requires the make, model and serial numbers of the handguns. Copies are sent to BATF and local law enforcement.

It smells, and I explain this to my customers. If they are OK with it, I send it in. If not, it is real simple to pick up one handgun today, and come back after the other one next week.

I would NEVER allow a Multiple form to go in on me. The BATF is using the information to build a database of "unlicensed dealers." The presumption is, that if you are buying more than one handgun at a time, then you are going to resell some of them.

A good buddy of mine, once in the gun business, used to hit pawn shops and do multiple purchases. A lot of corporate shops will not allow a transfer to a FFL, so he often had to fill out the 4473s, and if he bought multiple handguns, the Multiple Handgun form was sent in on him. After he did this a couple of times, HE WAS VISITED by the BATF. Of course, he had a FFL, and he explained the difficulty in buying wholesale in certain pawn shops, and that was explanation enough. The point is, that the BATF did come calling, and that is something that should be avoided if possible, IMHO.

You do what you want to do, just be aware of what is happening.

My FFL dealer received my first gun on 7/12. I went to the store paid the fees and filled out the 4473 on 7/16. When he called it in, the computers were down and couldn't get an answer, later on that day it went through. I told him I'll pick it up when my next gun comes in.

My second gun came in 7/19. On 7/20 I filled out the 4473 paid the fees and it went through right away.

Then he had me fill in a new date (7/20) at a place on the first 4473 that wasn't filled in on 7/16.

So I picked up two guns today, although they were received one week apart and the paperwork was filled out four days apart(except were he had me put the date on the first one that says I picked it up today and not when I filled out the 4473 originally.

Is this a Multiple Handgun Purchase?

If they were both handguns, yes it is.

A couple of items in this thread need correcting. NICS does NOT get serial numbers, make or model. Only "handgun" or "long-gun." Even if you are exempt from a NICS check, the Multiple Handgun form is still sent in. I agree with Nunn, best to avoid it.

You can buy all the high power rifles and shotguns all day long, but God forbid you buy two evil handguns within the same week...

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Watch out guys. Big Brother is watching. Don't mean to sound paranoid but you know they moniter sites like this one. I'll admitt most of the few ATF guys I know feel the same as most of us about guns but the newer breed coming up through the ranks may have a different opinion. Just a heads up. Oh that extra nine I bought, fell out of the boat while I was fishing the river last week.

Whats worse is I have a Ruger KP-90 45cal. coming early next week.

I had this all planned out and had to change FFL holders because the one I had was an IDIOT. He knowingly sent an Expired FFL without sending the Extension with it. I lost out on a NIB KP-90 for $281. + $10. shipping on that one. The seller forgot to put a reserve on it and was looking for a way out and found it with my EX-FFL holder.

Then I sent Money Order Priority Mail to one seller and a Personal check regular mail to another. My EX-FFL holder forgot to sign the FFL to the seller I sent a Money Order Priority Mail.

This is what caused me to have all these guns coming in a relatively short time span.

My new FFL holder said it would be illegal if I had more than one handgun shipped to him and only picked up one each week. He said it would be deceptive practices.
