Bullet traps Carpet kind

I told a friend about some of the people here that have a bullet trap in the basement made from carpet. He wants to make one. Can anyone, that has one, tell me how many layers it takes to stop different calibers using factory ammo? Handgun caliber for the most part. Rifle if anyone has done it. I know that carpet can be a different thickness, but in general how many layers? Anything other hints I can tell him? I want to get him going on this so I can use it too. LOL

If I knew then, what I know now.

Stacks of tightly boxed books, compressed stacks of newspapers, old tires, pressed cardboard boxes, sandpiles, your neighbors cat, it all works good as long as you have them thick enough and replace them when they get shot out.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I remember reading about a 2X4 frame, about the size of a refigerator. The top of the frame scalloped on the sides to accept furring strips on which the carpet pieces are hung folded over. Kind of like trousers on a wire hanger, I think. Am I right?

Take some samples to the range and check out the stopping power of carpet. Once you have found this value-- triple it for safties sake.
5- carpetpads= 15 pads or more. They will age and you will need to replace them quite often!
