Scopes and the adjustments.

Why do scopes need adjusting every so often? Seems if they were going to move- they would move while the rifle is being used, not setting in the safe. I have'nt had to set two of my rifles for a long time, but another two need resetting almost every year.
Anyone have this problem?

Mine don't seem to move much, though I do tend to use higher end scopes. It is hard to understand why they would move when not being used, though there may be stresses loaded into the adjustment mechanisms that release in time, but certainly things can change while the rifle is riding down that long rough mountain road home after the hunt.

Besides, it is a good excuse to take the rifle out and shoot it between hunts.

I also try to stick with good optics. I have a Leupold I havent needed to adjust for several years and I have a Simmons that needs adjusted every year. I think the better the scope manufacturer the less fiddling you are forced to do.

Daddo, are those scopes on wood stocked or synthetic stocked firearms? If wood, it may be warping.

I agree with aglore about the wood there are many reasons why a cheaper scope will get a little screwy with ( going from extreme temps, not having rings aligned ,to just plain crappy optics) but if you stick with higher end pieces you will find that they hardly ever need to be readjusted swarvoski and ziess are a couple of real good hunting scopes as for long range (tactical) night force just can't be beat well there is my .02
