My wife and I are having a discussion about the crime statistics in the UK. I told her that assults are up dramaticly since the ban on most firearms several years ago. She says thats BS. Where might I find the factual data to show crime statistics for the last ten years or so? She is an ex TV reporter type so wants the facts!

Thanks Zip forgot about "Mond". He would be a great source!

I checked the NRA site but didn't find anythng helpfull. I have had that data at my fingertips before in Gun Magazines but tossed it. If I remember correctly personal assults are up 300-400% since the laws have changed, but then, as my wife points out, sometimes I exaggerate a little bit.

All violent crime is up...not just assaults...although I guess the word "assault" could encompass many things.

We have a fellow trap shooter from London at our club. He comes over here from London about every three monts for a couple weeks. My last discussion with him was about the gun restrictions and how it affected the citizens. He informed me they are fighting like mad to get some of their gun rights restores as the Assault and home invasion rate had increased 300%

    THREE HUNDRED PERCENT:

It's true that Great Britain tops the U.S. in total violent crimes, although we still have a huge lead in rape and murder rates. Britain makes up the difference with muggings, assaults, and home invasions. They have this phenomenon over there called "Happy Slapping" where kids run up to some stranger on the street and assualt them while taping it on their camera phone, all for fun.

The crime rate in the UK is far higer than here.violent crime, burglaries and sexual crimes have risen greatly in the last few years.Gun crimes have increased although hand guns are banned completely. The sad thing is that their rate of succesful crime detection has dropped and is now lower than here.I would not move back there, you can tell your wife its worse there than here.Like here some places are worse than others.Glasgow has I believe the highest murder rate in europe.Where Mond lives I belive it is pretty low key.I go back about 5 times a year and still have one son over there.I would prabably go back as the wages for what I did are far higher than here but I have a 14 year old daughter so I want the best for her.

Thanks for the information. Its off post but if you are a gunsmith and no handguns are allowed in UK, how can the wages be better there for your trade. Must be a lot of gunsmiths with nothing to do!

Sig I was a civil engineer by profession, when I came here in 1990 I couldnt get much work so I went back to the UK to work commuting from my then home in Marin county.Took up gunsmithing (which has been my lifelong hobby)5 years ago.Went o the Susanville gunschool.Incidently the couple of gunsmiths I know in the UK do pretty well. While handguns are totally banned there are still an awfal lot of people who own shotguns and rifles.

ok , i breifly looked through the topic, so ask away, dont get too carried away with essays of dialog( im dislexic, hard work some of this!!)
so crime in the good 'ol UK.. every where is diffrent, as any where there's good & bad in all, i dont carry a gun, but i wouldnt go out anywhere, swingin' loose(if ya know what i meen)the secret is be plesant & 99.9% are plesant with you, dont be flash, be modest.use your instinct, the nicest people are the worst..
but in all ,i been here best part of 30 yrs, & i'd be lying if i said it had not changed dramatically, cos it has...but its safe.real safe.
look at the cars, the streets & the locals, if your comfertable ok, if not get outa there.
if you look like a scared sheep, big wolf will get you. butt the wolf & stand ya ground ,he'll think twice..
    i lived in italy,uk, germany,new zealand.
    i feel best here....[:)]

Shouldnt have thought there is much crime up where you live Mond.Judging by the photo of your place it looks fairly rural.Whats Leeds like now havnt been there for a lot of years, not since the 60s when I worked over in Thorpe Arch for short while.
