wasn't he the RAF pilot who had crashed, lost both legs, and resumed flying with his artificials limbs? was shot down again but captured, and became such a pain in the * to the prison guards by his constant escape attempts, the Camp Kommandant took his fake legs away for a couple months....

That's him, but it sounds like they only threatened to take the fake legs away. That's according to Wikipedia, so a grain or two of salt might be needed.

I was just reading up on him, on the same Wikipedia page, and found this gem:

"Bader was known, at times, to be head-strong, blunt and unsophisticated when he made his opinion known. During one visit to Munich, Germany, as a guest of Adolf Galland, he walked into a room full of ex-Luftwaffe pilots and said, "My God, I had no idea we left so many of you buzzards alive".

Bader flew from RAF Tangmere which was about a 15 minit drive from where I was born in the UK.There was a pub in the village named after Him(Bader Arms). He was called Dogsbody by the other pilots. When some one is so drunk they can hardly stand they are often described as legless in the Uk.One night a friend described some one as legless in The Bader Arms and every one burst Into fits of laughter[:D]

Lots of the newer roads in the village are named after allied aircraft.Black painted Lysanders used to fly from there on moonlit nights and land in France in a field and bring back agents. One of the houses by the airfield was taken over by the SOE and was used for debrifi g of agents and under cover training. Many had a one way trip[:(]
