    Now Country..Your grandmom ain't so different. After I got to hunting them seriously and bring them home, my dad made me clean the heads. He loved the brains too!! He usually hogged the heads, his favorite part, but he did let me taste now and then. Not bad..Not sure I could face it now, but I liked them fine then..

    Salzo, I'm going to try your squirrel recipe, but it will have to wait until the fall season. My mom gots priority on the ones I have, and I've decided to take them to her tomorrow.
    Wow, glad to hear I'm not the only one in the world to try robins. They really aren't bad, at least as I remember it. Ate an owl once too. Compliments of an uncle who was nuttier than me. I don't remember how it tasted. I do like frogs legs, but I'm afraid that is about over. The bull frogs are almost extinct..

    Thanks for the recipe Salzo, i've only had them when camping as a youngin. I really like quail, good stuff! I got to try some quail from wisconsin when i was living there, it was better than the little ones we shot in the desert. By the way, this weekend i'm going up to Tennesee and plan on hunting for rabbit for the first time. What's the deal about checking the liver?? I'll be alone so i don't have anyone to show me. I have seen one skinned and have eatin them 3 times but never been shown the liver deal.

    Azzeater..No rabbit season open here in TN until November, but I'm not judging. Lots of farm folk want them thinned out. As to the liver, it should be a dark deep color, no spots of any kind. The diseased ones are extremely rare, so don't sweat it too much. Have fun, wish I could join you.

    Will i be a law breaker if i shoot them on private property?? i don't feel like dealing with the law in a different state. Know what i mean?

    4Godandcountry, Did this in 1976 while astudent at VA Tech. Froze the groundhogat the Va Tech Dairy Science center and then set him up for the old man(Walter Shepard) who managed the calf barns at Tech. One of the worst cussings I've ever heard after the 3rd shot from that Ithaca LSA55 22-250!!! GHD

    A guy I worked with said they wrap the squirrel (tree rats) in foil, along with butter, garlic and/or whatever veggies you like, then cook it on the grill.

    Azzeater, My memory suggests that landowners who are having pest problems with them(rabbits) can shoot or trap them anytime, and that would probably apply to his guest if I'm right, but I haven't been able to confirm it with my Hunting and Trapping guide, so here's a website where you might can find out: www.state.tn.us/twra

    Now you got me going....I have lived off of the land...and woodchuck will definatly support life. My father hunts woodchuck for their liver....if you like liver, you have not even had liver till you try woodchuck liver. So tender you can cut it with a fork. They are very clean animals...just eat hey or grasses for the most part. Slow cooking the critter will help with the tough ones. Par boil first, then open fire is the best I've found. You can also make jerky out of it, as it is fairly lean under the fat layer. The jerky when cooked is very tender, like a yankee pot roast....

    keep lots of extra uppers for your ar..you can change often enough to keep the thing from over heating...what ever caliber fits the moment..~Secret Select Society of Suave Stylish Smoking Jackets~

    Trav, I'll try that liver sometime soon..Sounds good.
    I'm going to try anything that seems even remotely reasonable. As a teen, what I wanted most in the world was to be a real woodsman and take my living from the woods and streams. I've been through two wives, raised two families, retired from two jobs, and finally it's my turn. I'm 64, still doing well with the old body, have enough money, and have one more life left in me. I'm going to enjoy it as long as I can! I'm not a fanatic,, a good steak is fine, and I do visit my local Food City now and then, but they don't sell me much meat.
