New $740 Rem Bolt .22 - Me thinks it sucks!

I just read the write - up on the new, high grade Remington .22 sporter and I came away real unimpressed. The barrel is too short, and accuracy didn't sound like it was break-through level. I have a Remington 512x and Winchester 69s that will equal what they reported(I think it was American Rifleman). Jeez, even my stock, 10-22s are in the same range. You can still buy a nice 50s - 60s bolt action for less than $300 and that's what I'd advise - plus, it's only taken Remington 25 years to realize that most shooters don't want the nylon- synthetic cr*p that they've been pushing.

Any barrel length over 16" in a .22 is just wasted,The .22 reaches it's full pontetial in 16".

I believe ATF and I read the exact same article on the affects of barrel length on .22's. He is correct per the article I read. A 16" barrel is the longest barrel you need on a .22, anthing more than that and the bullet begins to slow down inside the barrel.

As a proud owner of a 541-S Custom, I hope they have the foresight to chamber their top of the line rimfire in 17HMR!!!!!!!!!!!!! GHD 19" is the optimal length for the 17HMR!!!!!

My Model 52 still out shoots every .22 bolt action sporting rifle I've ever owned or fired. For a fraction of the cost, a CZ-452 provides outstanding accuracy for the money while the first generation Kimbers and the SAKO Model 78 (NOT the Finnfire) were also outstanding rifles. I have a weak spot for .22 rimfires of all types- rifles and hand.guns

You might get the maximum velocity out of a 16" tube, but the longer (iron) sight radius and forward weight of the longer barrels make them more accurate (or at least more user friendly) for offhand shooting.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
