Now remember, you have to spen that extra money to support those gun shops.

I admit, when you buy a few boxes of ammo at those prices it is hard as heck to not buy them at Walmart and save $30-50 depending on how much you buy. There are some times that it is way to hard to support the gun shop, $10 difference a box is just too much of a gap.

Quite often Wal-mart will sell ammo cheaper than I, as a dealer, can buy it.

That's why I reload. I do wish I had a local dealer to buy anything from though.

Called loss-leaders. Sell ammo ( or whatever) at cost or below in hopes of selling other related goods. Around here they sell a gun at close to cost knowing you'll need ammo, maybe a license, maybe a new hunting coat---boots----gloves. You get the point.

More bang for your bucks from WalMart but always try to do business with the local gun dealer who can give you service. I try to keep my own little rule of always buying a box of ammo, even if it's .22s, whenever I am in a local gun store especially when just looking around. This keeps the owner happy that you are not waisting his time with questions and "just" looking at his guns and also developes a relationship so when you do spy a gun you want in his shop he may be more willing to give you a better deal.

I've got to weigh in on this. A couple of years ago I worked part-time at a local gun shop. We would get dealer catalogs in the mail with new guns. I wrote down some of the prices, dealer wholesale prices, and went to our local Wal-mart. They were selling new Savage 22's at the same price the catalog listed them. Of course we had to pay shipping to get them, then mark them up. Ammo prices were about the same. I know Wal-mart buys in bulk quantities that a small local shop can't match, but why can't the manufactures give the little guy a break? I tried to get in touch with some of the big companies, S&W, Ruger, Winchester. No one would return any messages except Jennings. The gun and ammo companies are hurting the little shops by the deals they make with the big retailers. Maybe, the next time you buy a new gun and send in that warranty card you should let them know how you feel.

Keep in mind that the big stores not only get volume pricing but because of their volume they can work on a lower price margin. When I was in the retail grocery business the chain supermarkets were working with a 3-5% price margin while our small store needed 20-25% just to break even. I agree with gunpaq in that I try to buy something at the local shop every time I go. Every dime helps them out.

Most of the local gun shops around here I would not buy a piece of gum from them. However there are two where I will buy non Wal Mart Ammo from. And guess what, these two do not have that little stupid sign on the front door, you know the one, the I dislike the most.

there is only one gun shop that I deal with in my area and I buy all my guns from there. I don't buy much ammo from them because of the HUGE difference in price. The best price i can get from the gun shop is still a few bucks more than wal-mart. Wal-Mart doesn't sell Wolf ammo so I do buy that by the case from the gun shop, but the rest is from wal-mart.

I used to work in the sporting goods dept at wal-mart a few years back, and they mark up their guns about 10% from what the distributor lists them at. Now there are a few guns that don't come from the distributor because they are a regular item in the store...those have a lower mark up...but this was five years ago...things may have changed.

Walmart almost never has the ammo I am looking for anyway. Ever try to get information there? I buy some .22 ammo at Wally World, but they have never even had a gun I wanted when I have looked there. The gunshops are all over the place in price ($100 range on the price of a Browning Buckmark pistol). I get a lot of my stuff on line.
