22/22mag home test results

Several people on this and other forums have commented how the performance of a 22 mag as compared to 22 long rifle is not that much different when fired from a handgun. So I decided to do my own test. I used the same handgun, a Ruger single six 22/22mag with 4-1/2" barrel. The ammo was CCI for the mag and Federal for the long rifle. Both bullets were solid (not hollowpoints). The scientific instrument with which to measure was a telephone book placed on the ground-I'm not sure what I will tell my wife when she asks what happened to it. Distance: approximately 2 feet. After firing one round from each cylinder I counted the number of pages that were torn (not necessarily penetrated) as a result of the bullets' impact. Here are the results:22 mag - the cover plus 447 pages22 long rifle - the cover plus 146 pagesThis test tells me the 22 mag is considerably more powerful, even from a handgun. Either that, or I am missing something basic in my country-boy test procedure.

I am very inpressed.Would not have thought the Mag would have done that good.I would have to drive a 125 miles to find a phone bood that thick. Thanks for a post that involves actualy shooting a gun.

this is how i see ita 22mag out of a pistol is like a 22lr out of a riflea 22mag out of a rifle has a little bit more power at 100 yards than a 22lr (rifle) at point blank.

jet-- Your statement brings up an idea for another test. I think I will try the comparison of 22 long rifle from my 10/22 and 22 mag from the Single-Six.

Rafter-S,Interesting test...keep us informed. Could it be that the "Yellow Pages" are tougher than the residental section? (heehee)

Rafter, that was a very good test and the results were put in terms that even I could understand!! Thanks for posting!!! Be sure to follow up and post the results of your next test. I'm very interested in seeing what you have to say about the 10/22 vs 22.mag handgun.

Another interesting test would be to compare the 22 WRF (22 Special) to the 22lr and the 22mag. The 22 Special can be fired in the 22 mag cylinder. Interesting results. You might have to get your wife a new phone book with all of these tests.

Want me to send you some shorts for a test, might as well make it complete? Maybe we'll find that a .22 short in a rifle is as good as a .22 lr, in a pistol?

I put a 7.62x39 hole in my phone book once, as a gag.My mother thought a worm had been in there. My father knew better.

I shot a hardhat once, the common hard plastic type with a 'short',out of a Ruger single six,at around 30 ft.I was surprised to see it go through both sides so easily...those hard hats are pretty thick..218

Good test, Rafters. First time I shot the Mag from a single-six (6" bbl) it went through the phone book and most of the way through a Sears catalog. Never counted the pages!!! But it was kinda funny seeing where it hit in the lingerie section, I think .22 Mags think like I do...uhh.. never mind. I'd kinda wonder how a CB would fare?? 80 pages??? I think a short would go further than a long, though, if they still make longs???? Seems to me that the long was probably the worst .22 round made (not L.R.).
