Best Shotgun Scope

Any suggestions on the best scope for a Mossberg 835 w/rifled slug barrel? Would it be possible to use a Simmons Pro-Diamond for use with my smooth-bore barrel while hunting turkey and then again for use with the rifled slug barrel when hunting deer?

Try a Weaver Quick point, not really a scope, but Great in low light, projects a red dot on the target, once ya get it zeroed, it is great, real good on shots up to about 75 yrds.

Burris 1.5 will take all your gun can dish out.

1X4 Leupold or one of the 1X3 Weavers if you can find one.

How would you rather die, 10,000 foot pounds of muzzle energy in the BUTT or a sharp knife in the HEART?

I would think the Simmons would work for you.
    I use a BSA Catseye 3 - 10 x 44 on my 11-87, and like it a lot - a great scope for less than a $ 100.
I considered the low power, small objective scopes (Leupold/Burris) but am quite happy with the BSA (have 3 of them now).

What Varmit Hunter said. The Simmons will actually do the job. For a while...

best thin g i have found is a holosight. only problem is your looking at about 300.00 however i saw rebuilt ones in the midway catalog i think for 189.00. i dont have one but have used them and for pistol or shotgun they seemed great to me. carl

Holosite is very good. Though with a B-Square mount you're in for some pain!

I have to vote Dot sight also. Deer hunting with a shotgun means a Maximun range of 125 yards. (IMHO that's actually too far) Anything above a 2X is overkill especially on a really close shot. My personal experience has been that in the event a second shot is needed
picking up the dot sight is faster than getting the scope back on target.

I live in Illinois and every year I come across some poor soul at the range, bloody and beaten with Scope Nose from getting too close and not considering the recoil of the slug gun.

By the Way Idsman...Where are you in Iowa, I lived in Grinnell for 10 years and my family still has a cabin on Rock Creek Lake...

Electronic dot sights with red colored lens will not let you see as well as scopes do in "gray light" (early morning), or "dark light" (late afternoon). When I use my Lone Eagle in 7mm-08 single with Aimpoint, I try to stay near open areas.

Do prefer low power, or no power scopes with heavy hairs, or dots.

Varmit Hunter has it right....a low power scope has the advantage of max light transmission, bigggggggggggggg Field of View, faster target aquisition.

If a 'hunter' can't hit a deer with a shotgun that's capable at 75+ yards, let me know where he's hunting. I won't hunt near there.

    Happy Bullet Holes!

William81--I live in Sioux City (about in the middle of the state on the western border). I really need to do some research. I'm not even sure if a red-dot sight is legal for hunting here. I know that you can't have any sort of electronic sighting device on a bow. I'll have to check into the shotgun laws. I know that instrumentofwar gets really tight groups at 100 yards with his Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 topped with a Simmons Pro-Point.

idsman, It is worth checking out in my opinion. I have a Tasco ProPoint II on my Rem. 870 and another one on my Colt Anaconda. As my eyes have aged, it is much easier for me to pick up my target with the Dot Sight than with a scope.

I have my 870 sighted in at 75 yards and can consistantly shoot Sub
1 1/2" groups with Federal Sabot slugs.....

If they are legal in Iowa, check out the Holosights......Smaller, lighter and an even better sight picture than the tube dot sights....

Had a Bushnell on a Mossberg 695 for 2 years. Loved the circle X reticle - that is until it worked loose inside the scope and started flopping around. Must have been the 3" magnums. I don't buy Bushnell anymore.
