money v. principle

I picked up a Craftsman sharpening stone, unused in the box, at a yard sale for fifty cents.

I listed it here for $5 start and $10 shipping and handling and by handling I meant the time it takes me to drive to post office, wait in line, and mail the package. Flat rate box is $6.80. I was getting $3.20 for my effort.

I got an email from the eventual purchaser stating he would bid if I lowered the shipping cost. It got lost in my inbox and I didn't see it for about a month. I wrote back and told him I had lowered the shipping. He won the auction for the $10 start price + $7 shipping.

GunBroker got 50 cents final value fee instead of 25 cents and I got $4.95 for handling instead of $3.20. The buyer paid $2 more total, but he didn't pay too much for the shipping!
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Yeah but he's happy. He got it for less shipping!

That's why our country is in the fix it is today, smoke and mirrors work for many.

Very much like 'Free Shipping'. I've tried to explain many times, there is no free shipping! You pay for it one way or the other - the seller isn't simply taking less money. Overall cost is overall cost period.
