Not sure why but I really like them. These are my Mossbergs. Basically the same gun in 12GA/16GA/20GA/410. They all have C-lect chokes.

I have been tempted by them in the past, but I wonder how practical they are for hunting. I could see the bolt being tricky to work for a follow-up shot.

those guns came during a time of little wealth and hunting was for food. shots were not to be wasted. a rabbit or squirrel for the pot was expected to be 1 shot only.quote:Originally posted by brewer12345

I have a 36" barrel 12 ga. Marlin Goose Gun that I'm going to list real soon!
A friend of mine built a real nice little 20 ga slug gun from a Mossberg bolt action. Added a scope cut the barrel and it looked like a damn rifle!!
They had their place along the way.

in the days of lead shot that was THE gun to have in the goose pit. 100 yard shots were the norm at Crab Orchard Refuge in southern illinoisquote:Originally posted by gearheaddad

I have a set of the mossberg's also. Always kind of liked the bolt actions too. They have been very reliable so far. Taken a lot of squirrels with the 12.

Heck, they are a working tool. Can't fault them for anything. The "select" choke was a head of it's time like the Polychoke.

That's insane. Why?..It's the user of any gun, not the gun. Here, no problem except full autos.

The representative of the gun club( Ipswich,Mass
(now this was when I was in High
School)speaking at our small time club (North Andover ,Mass) said they
had bad experiences with lugs letting go and banned them
from the club.At the time I owned a J.C. Higgins 16 ga bolt
action,I never shot it after I heard his story.

There WAS a 12 g J.C. Higgins bolt gun (NOT a Mossberg) that was recalled over a complaint of bolts coming out when fired. That gun did not have locking lugs on the bolt.

The Mossberg bolt shotguns were the blue collar working stiff's gun. Farmer, shopkeeper, young shooters. Inexpensive, reliable, durable. It is pretty rare to get a clean miss on first shot and a hit with the second. The Mossys point and shoot well.

2 years ago made my S-I-L's Christmas when I gave him a replacement for the Mossberg 20 g he grew up with.

My Dad had a Mossberg 16 ga and he could fire his 3rd shot directly after my 3rd from my 870. He was quick and accurate...

I use to have a German Remo 12 gauge bolt gun. This thing was huge.It was not a converted Mauser. The bolt was as round as a half dollar. Got rid of it.

Mossberg and Tar Hunt were the most accurate bolt slug guns I ever shot.
Some places still have laws requiring "shotgun" seasons for deer, when it's easier to scrape 'em off the front grille.
They have their place in those states where the longest shot is 50 yards, and trees are overabundant.
So glad I don't have to go through that scenario every year.
Deer in the Jemez just disappear every so often....

I too have become a fan of bolt action shotguns. But for a very specific reason as I live in one of those 'shotgun' states. I really used to hate that we couldn't use center fire cartridges for deer & still do to some extent.

However, most of us who are really into deer hunting do use rifles, they are just chambered in 20 gauge or .50 cal.

My 1st bolt action was the Mossberg 695 12 gauge slug gun. Very accurate & also very hard to shoot well quickly, due to very crappy trigger. From this gun I learned that 'easy to shoot well' trumps accuracy every time (at least for me).

Switched to easier to shoot well guns for many years until my son was old enough to hunt on his own. Then bought the Savage 220 20 gauge slug gun. Basically a Savage rifle with a 20 gauge barrel & the awesome accutrigger, this gun is very hard to beat. For whatever reason, my son decided he shoots other guns better, so this one sat for a few years until I decided I may as well use it. Now it is my 'go to' gun for deer. Handles like a rifle, because really it is one. Shots out to 150 yards or so are handled quite well as long as I do my part. The only real problem is the cost of those dang sabot slugs - which I guess is really the only gripe I have about not being able to use rifle cartridges - sure would be a a lot cheaper!
