Going hunting for antelope

I was going to use my 257 roberts and need scope recomendations. Also, is the 257 powerful enough for antelope or should I use my 308 winchester??? Anyone have a recomendation for a good lodge or a place to go????I have only hunted whitetail and this trip has been a dream of mine for a while. Iam planning on going next year.I just want to get all my ducks in a row now so I can begin to save and plan. Which state is the best to antelope hunt in????

Never hunted the critters before but the .257 should be plenty enough gun. From the guys I know who hunt them, they say most shots are at 200yds. plus, unless you hunt over a water hole. I would say that at minimum a 3-9X40 scope for ranges of 200 plus. I hunt coyotes and at 200 yds. critters look real small with lower magnification scopes.

,,,,the .257 will do the trick !!!!,,,,If you want a guided hunt 'and' the potential for a buck to put in the B&C Book you might want to contact/Google Kennedy Hunting Service in Des Moines, NM,,,,,I have hunted with Kirk for antelope, deer, elk, bear, etc,,,,,,He has most comfortable accommodations and there are so many antelope on his ranches they have to go 'piggyback' [;)],,,,,I've put one in the record book and have another higher score,,,,,If you're an elk hunter he has one area that can produce 400+ bulls but it ain't cheap,,,,,

Thanks. Money is not the problem I just want a trip that will last a lifetime. I did one trip to missouri for whitetail and it was a very memorable hunt. I am looking up this ranch right now. Thanks.

D B Wesson killed his antelope w/357 Magnum revolver-along w/everything else in North America. He may have practiced a little too [;)]

I wouldn't top that Bob with anything less than a Zeiss, preferably a Schmidt and Bender. 3-9x40 would get the job done as would a 4-12.

You definitely want to load your own since factory ammo tends to be loaded lite. 117's are up to the job if you are.

I took a nice antelope in New Mexico with a stock Winchester Model 70 in .270.
Topped with a Burris Fullfield II 3x9 and a Harris bipod attached.

    276 yards was no problem.

I used Federal Fusion 130 gr bullets.

    1 shot.

You don't need anything fancy. Any deer caliber will do just fine.
    Antelope are easy to drop.

Antelope is one of my favorite to hunt and it's always a blast for me. WY has the largest antelope numbers (followed by MT)and with a very good chance to draw for out-of-staters.

For guided hunt, check out http://www.tylersims.com/antelopehunts.html

Either of your rifles will do very well on antelope, esp if you use the right bullet/ammo. But I highly suggest to bring them both, just in case, esp. for a hunt of a lifetime. Optics wise, get the best your money can buy in a variable scope and practice for the distance you are willing and able to humanely harvest the game. Most of my scopes are 3-9x40, 4.5-12x40/44, and 6.5-25x44.

Good binocs, rangefinder, spotting scope, wind meter, bipod are always nice to have.

Oakie, are you from IA? That Roberts will handle them easy. Have a great time, I look to do that myself. Going to try Wyoming. But maybe next year. Post some pics.

I'm topping my Bob with a Nikon 4X12 (I finally settled on it)

Wyoming has great Antelope hunting. Eastern Weld County, Colorado has big ol' herds, but us locals spend five years waiting for a draw, so I don't know what the chances are of getting a tag.

If you're not trying a 750-yd shot, I've been assured that the Roberts is enough gun. They guy I hunted with had kills from 35-feet to 250 yards. He harvested one nearly every year. With a 257 Roberts.

Here in NM all you have to do is find the ruts along the fence line. The goats won't jump a fence , but will dig a rut under them.I'm sure they do the same else where. The meat sure makes great green chili stew. I'm sure you all can screw up green chii stew. Its cubed boiled spuds, green chili, and Antelope meat, thats been browned.

Oakie if you want to hunt in Wyoming let me know. I know a guy that is the best around. He is out of Casper and has about 200000 acres under lock and key and he only shoots the big ones. He is expensive but every year the Remington family, the benilli family and sarvoski family come hunt with him, because every year they shoot large deer and antelope

Can't wait to try out the new Burris Eliminator ranging riflescope this year!
I'm mounting it on my new Mosin Nagant for my Wyoming Antelope shoot this year. BTW-Bud! get ready!
Got the scope from Sportsmans W(h)orehouse for less than they paid; the sales mgr. couldn't believe it was $1300, and marked it down to $825.[:D]

The antelope I harvested here in MT is by far the best tasting, they feed on grass, wheat, and alfalfa. The ones I got in NM and AZ are very gamey, I guess because they feed on sagebrush.

Is that legal in WY? In some states it is illegal. Here in MT, it is legal only for varminting.

I think Iam going to choose Montana and go see Joe and Denise while Iam out there. He was kind enough to send me some antelope jerky and it was out of this world. This is one state I really want to visit and the wife said she would go with me. She wants to go horse back riding while Iam hunting. Think I will have a blast.

Ican shoot them speed goats right out my kitchen window [:D] Going out the lane from my house I would have to stop to let them cross.

Ohh and I bought the last house in MT, no vacancy [:D]
