Baker city has snow almost up to the windows on my shop. I got 3' or more on the shop roof and don't know if the roof is going to hold. Still snowing. there is ice under the snow and can't clear off the walk ways because of the ice. Main Freeway is shut down for about 200 miles.
Last night was the first night above zero for a week or so. Whoa is me. I'm 80 and running out of gas. No mail man and I don't blame him one bit. Deer are in the yard and covered with snow. I don't know how they can survive . I have been feeding them bread. If the shop roof doesn't collapse before morning I will try and remove some of the snow.
This house has been here for over 100 years an will probably stand the test. We haven't had this much snow for over 100 years.

    sounds like you need this:

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

In Boise the snow on the roof of the house is gone.

The shop snow has slid off.

Jerry, I'll trade you your three feet of snow for the 16" we have, but you have to take the high winds and the freezing rain with it!
    Be careful!

I don't imagine Alabama would recover from a brunt like that! I hope your shop roof doesn't fall in....if we were any closer I'd come up there and stare at it for you (because I really don't know what good beyond that I'd be?)

It's about 50 miles south of La Grande Oregon. Beautiful little town.

Baker City is about 60 miles from the Idaho border and about 42 miles from LaGrande Oregon in eastern Oregon on Interstate 84. It was originally a gold mining town in the 1860's. Down town still looks like about 1890. It is 3500ft and surrounded by the blue mountains. Population about 10,000 95% Caucasian. 77% republican. Totally opposite the liberal side of the state. One of the coldest places in Oregon in winter. It is a lot like Jackson hole Wyoming. We have never had this much snow since 1915. It has been a lot colder though. When I worked here in 1962 it was 39 below zero for a day or two and out of town it was 45 below. 86 proof Whiskey was freezing. That is how we knew it was 45 below.

I got one of those Avalanche snow removal tools yesterday. It works when you get it started. It is hard to start because it has rollers on it and will sit on top of the snow until you have a bare spot to get it started. So I made a snow razor out of sheet metal and aluminum bar stock with skids on it. If it had an aluminum pole it would work better than the avalanche. You can't fins everything you need in a small town.

Jerry, if I lived in your area I'd sure give you a hand with that roof!

I know how hard it is to ask for help or to seek a hired hand for certain situations, but this is one of those times IMO.

And Jerry.....you need to take special care of those gifted hands of yours! [;)]

Just last Wednesday I was over through Ontario and Vale could not believe all the shops, sheds, and barns that had collapsed from snow load. Saw one just East of Vale that had had literally wiped out a really big expensive looking fifth wheel camper.
Most were newer built sheds, but there were a few older ones sagging pretty heavy.

Saw more Chukars in the canyon between Vale and Burns that I have seen my entire life.

Hope you get a break and that roof slides soon.

I hated shoveling snow off the roof. We put a metal roof on the new house, just for this reason. Having a vacation home in the snow belt sucks sometimes..I have seen a few homes collapse from heavy snow. Be safe. Oakie

When I get done in Grandview tomorrow it was mentioned I may be going to the plant in Baker City, from the sounds of it I should protest.
