Gunpowder residue blamed in pawn shop fire

Fire officials determined the fire at Jim's Pawn Shop on Wednesday started accidentally when gunpowder residue accumulated on a foam-rubber wall in the firing range and ignited.

The fire caused extensive fire damage to the 10,000 square-foot firing range and smoke damage throughout the building, which also includes a jewelry store and pawn shop. Fire officials were not able to give an estimate of the financial extent of the damage. Owner Jim Faircloth was still determining the damage Thursday.

Faircloth's daughter, Jo Faircloth, said Wednesday that a small fire started a similar way several years ago, but employees were able to contain it with a fire extinguisher. To prevent such fires, employees replace and clean sections of the wall, Jo Faircloth said.

As a result of the fire, Faircloth said he is considering using another type of material to sound- and safety-proof the firing range, according to his lawyer, David Courie said.

Jim's Pawn Shop, excluding the firing range, opened for business Thursday. The firing range will open within days, Courie said.

Gunpowder is very dangerous. 2 years ago this entire area lost a good friend and an excellent reloading shop. Earl Knodes gun and reloading shop blew up killing Earl and seriously wounding a couple customers in the shop. Earl was an older fella in his 60s and had operated that shop for as long as I can remember. From what I understand Earl was smoking, as he always did in the shop and somehow gunpowder was ignited causing several cans or podwer to blow all at once, the building was leveled in the blast. Earl died a couple days later in the hospital. The shop was on his property located outside Donation PA on his property only 100 yds from his house. His wife has not been back to the property since the explosion. I'm getting choked up just sitting here typing this.

If you store powder PLEASE BE CAREFUL with it. Never think it won't happen to you. And by reading to the story posted by Josey, even redidue can be extremely dangerous.
