Cut down shotgun

does anybody know the law when it comes to shortening a shotgun? I have an old Steven model 58, don't use it for anything, it just hangs there taking up space and I want to make a good home defender out of it. Sure it's a bolt action but what they heck. How short can the barrel be and can I hack off the stock to make a pistol grip on this and be legal? I want it to be 100% legal because if I do this it will be my house gun and god forbid I ever need to use it, I don't want to get in trouble. I'm basically looking to make it easy to maneuver and lose the choke. Any suggestions and tips to keep it legal?
BTW, I already know about the downsides of shooting a "sawed off", hopefully if it is needed it will only have one shot out of it.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.
Don't cut it at 18 inches, cut it at 18-1/4 or 18-1/2 inches just to be safe. You have no idea who might be measuring that barrel someday. And hows about leaving the stock alone? You'll have a more controlled shot, and red flags will go up should you ever need to use the shotgun in self-defense with the stock altered also.
"Just my opinion."
