Monster Mega-Load, Part 2, to cause traffic delays

It's 250 feet long, 16-feet-wide and 14 feet tall. And soon, it will be inching its way along an interstate near you.

Monster Mega-Load Part 2 may sound like the next installment of the Transformers franchise. But it's actually the second of two traffic disruptions caused this week by the hauling of a large machine press through metro Atlanta. This time, the load is nearly twice as heavy as the 385,000-pound machine press that traveled along Interstates 20 and 75 on Monday night.

MegaloadGeorgia Department of Transportation is warning motorists that a 638,000-pound machine press will travel through metro Atlanta starting at 8 p.m. Thursday evening. It is en route from Columbia County (near Augusta) to White, Ga., about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta in Bartow County.

The vehicle and its oversized haul will take up two lanes of traffic and would be too tall to clear some bridges and utility poles and wires in the state. Thus, special care has gone into selecting a route, planning to travel at night and having two Georgia State Patrol vehicle escorts.

The mega load will also feature moving message boards warning of traffic interruptions at key bridges and intersections. Metro-Atlanta traffic will slow or even stop at some points due to the excessive size of the load, GDOT warned.

The final destination is voestalpine Automotive Body Parts Inc. on Voestalpine Drive in Bartow County.

"This is part of the equipment we are bringing in for a new process to be done in the U.S.," said company president Philipp Schulz. "We are hot-forming steel so it is triple-strength. It's an innovation that we need to make your cars lighter and still have corrosion protection. The mega load is part of that equipment."

Follow the mega load! (Better yet, don't): At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the mega load will travel westbound from Columbia County on the Georgia Coast to Newton County on I-20. The mega load will temporarily suspend travel overnight in Newton County. It will resume travel at 8 p.m., continuing on I-20 westbound through DeKalb County and then north on I-75 northbound through Fulton and Cobb counties en route to Bartow County.

We heard about part one last night on the way home from the Airport. We saw a similar one yesterday in Missouri heading back to the airport. Not sure what it was but similar in size. It was heading North on I49 near Anderson, MO

I was driving the other way and tried to count axles but it was similar to the one in jltrent's video... I'm sure Allen can tell us the load allowed per tire....

I think it was about 10 miles a day as there was some pretty steep mountains to climb. Also there were extra push trucks used when needed and they made a regular road tractor look small in size. A lot of power lines crossing the roads had to be raised and before it came through they leveled off spots along the road to were the destination would end everyday. It was like a parade when they went through a small town as there were people everywhere trying to get a glimpse. With the total combined weight of everything I think it was pushing close to 2 million pounds.

Most load ratings are 20,000 lb. per axle (4 tires) or 34,000 lbs. for a tandem (8 tires). I run 11x24.5 tall rubber and they are rated around 6500 lbs. each (for singles, not duals).
About 35 years ago I had a weighboy start to write me a ticket for being over the tire ratings on my steer axle, which weighed 13,800 lbs. I was running Continental tires up front which were rated at 7100 lbs. The bluecoat had never come across tires rated that high. Saved me a ticket.
I don't run super-singles but I think they are rated over 10,000 lbs.

Super singles are junk! Yes, 4 of them vs 8 regulat tires is about 400# lighter but pop one and you are stuck! Snow, terrible! May as well stay in the truckstop with the rest of the candyasses because they are a nightmare in snow and ice! High crosswinds make you blow around more with super singles, you lose stability with them. I drove a truck for a few months with them and never again will I drive a truck with them.
