I've seen the Remington model 710 rifle in .270 on sale at a major store for $329.00. Is this rifle any good for 200 yard shots?

The true question is...... " Is daddo any good for 200 yard shots"

With a good scope and some decent ammo "it's" good further than 200 yards but are you............. Please don't take offense....[;)]

I have no personal experiance with the model 710 remington, although i did look them over when they first came out.myself,i think this is a step in the wrong direction from Remington.I may be wrong.it would be interesting to hear from someone who has used one.

coonass- you cut me to the quick. I've been known to at least hit the side of a barn from the inside, and more than once too! I'm just leary of the cost. What makes a "cheap" rifle cheap? I have no problem with the Remington mod 700 vs in 22-250 as it will do .22" groups @100 yds easy, but it cost alot more. I don't want a rifle that won't get at least a kill zone shot at 200 yards (for deer). That would be about 3-4 inches.

No cut intended......[V][V][V][V][V]........ A guy down the road has one in .270 .... with a nikon ........ he groups well, for huntin, I think bout
    1.5" @ 100....... 3.5" @200....... and in a pie plate at 300...
Not 100% on the groups but there in that ballpark........ I don't like the grey color myself............

You always hear the someone wants a one hole gun........ It's more to it than that......... someone has to hold dat baby......[^][^]

Why not just spend that same amount on a good used Savage?

    Daddo,
The 710 is Remington's answer to Savages110/111 nitch market. They're not bad rifles. They have a short throw [about 60%]and the low cost is due to the method of production with the barrel being pressed. I've shot one a friend bought at Academy Sports and Outdoors. I liked the short throw. I don't have any passion for synthetic stock rifles.
A good shooter for the price. Buy it.

I do not own one, but sighted one in 2 years ago and checked again last year for a friend I hunt with. The look and feel is a little different but it really surprised me accuracy wise. His was a .270 and using factory Hornady 130gr spire pt. it shot 3 shot group in the 1 1/4 " range, trigger wasn't all that bad either. I suspect I could have done a little better with my handloads, but he basically uses it as a backup/loaner so we never got in to that. The bolt has a strange feel when working it, but I understand this was corrected some in later production.

daddo & others, as to the Remington 710 rifles, I would stay away from them. The bolts in those guns were made in a little contract machine shop in Paris, Ky. and they are not made to any decent tolerances at all. I know because I know some of the guys around here that work there. Now mind you that was when they were first introduced and I have not heard other wise as to whether or not they are still being made there. I have shot one in 270 but was not impressed with it at all. The bolt did have a heavy drag feel to it for me. I would agree with those that said to buy a Savage for the money instead. Just my own opinion.

the rem. 710 is a 1 1/2 inch grouper on a good day. usually it comes as a package deal with a scope for the price you mentioned. the grouping is sufficient for large game, not varmint hunting. remington is attempting to boost sales with this weapon by means of volume for first time remington gun owners. in my opinion, it does nothing to compliment the upper grade remingtons, 700 bdl for example.
on the other hand, it does appeal to some that desire the remington name to add to their high power collection. it simply does not have the quality that one would expect from the name. [:p]

Just sighted in my brother's 30.06.
    Came w/scope (cheeeeeeeeaaaaaaaap Bushnell)
    Overall,for the money,not too bad,but I think
I would either go for a good used Ruger,Rem.700,
or something else of higher quality,or save up
a little more and go with something new in the
    $500 range.You get what you pay for.IMHO

Thanks all! I think I've made up my mind as my safe is full of O.K. shooting rifles and I needn't another. I love the 300 H&H, the .243 and the 22-250, and even the 30-30 gives 2" @ 100 yds. Ya'll just saved me from a $350.00 mistake, not to add the scope. I'm an old hat, but I do like the synthetic stocks for their lightness and they aren't affected by humidity, but you got to admit- wood feels real good, is heavier and reduces recoil better.!
