Didn't want to get locked out after 10 responses so I thought I'd post this here....what is the best type of rifleing for accuracy?

Polygonal
Cut Rifleing
Micro-groove (Marlin)
Do the number of lands and grooves make a difference?

My gunsmith recommends button rifled barrels. He claims that is why the Savage rifles are so accurate. He only builds rifles with button rifled barrels. He has a few bench rest world records hanging on the wall from the 1980's, I think he knows what he is talking about.

The chief engineer at Marlin told me that micro-groove is definitely the best, no question.

I've heard polygonal is the best....there is not the fouling or lead buildup in the 90 degree corner between the land and groove. This is suppose to give more consistant accuracy and less fouling that could affect future shots. The better quality firearms use this type of rifling....is it because the performance is better? The ones I'm familiar with are Desert Eagle, HK, and Steyer. On the other hand, there are an awful lot of benchrest shooters that use button rifleing.....????

    Rembrandt,
I dont know a thing about barrel rifling, that being said, I also dont know how any of my rifles barrels are rifled, or the amount of lands and grooves. I dont have any complaint about any of them. I would think that since the companys that build guns all claim to use the best rifling method, it might not make a real big difference. There are those competition barrel builders out there that all claim to have the most accurate barrels also, they might not all use the same rifling methods either, but again, I dont know. I'd probably find out from all the competition barrel makers which method they use, and see if there is a trend to use the same method, if there is not a trend, then I'd guess its just a lot of sales hype, and one is no better than the other. I have seen some really good groups from my Savage with button rifling though, go figure. Good luck figuring this one out.

I think it comes down to a matter of opinion but I really like Micro Groove rifling it seems to last forever and is very accurate.

I have heard that for high velocity calibers they have a progressive twist rifling barrel that starts out with a longer twist and progresses tighter towards the end of the barrel to prevent wiping out the rifling just forward of the chamber...

I like the twisty-swirly kind on the INSIDE of the barrel.
