My Heart Sank

I think I can share this now. Looks like it is all going to be OK.
Bad guy was holed up in a back room of a house, claiming to have a shotgun and threatening to shoot officers. There were two in the house, one in the back yard.
As luck would have it, I got there late. Checked with the OIC, in the back yard, and he said to come to where he was.
I headed around back. I heard, "Stop...Police...Get down!"
Then I heard three quick shots just as I rounded the corner of the house. I was gratified to see my friend standing and the BG down, but when I heard the shots, my heart sank.
Get this: BG had a stick wrapped in a rag and a pistol gripped propane torch, and was gesturing with it as though it were a sawed-off shotgun. BG was running when the shots were fired, and was VERY lucky. He was only clipped.
BG will survive and spend a long time in prison.
My buddy's remark: "Dave, I didn't lead him enough."

BTW, the shooter is a genuine pistolero. Better than me. Not precisely accurate but accurate enough and FAST.
In over 26 years this was as close as I ever got to a police shooting. I hope it is as close as I get. There have been many that I have covered, and a total of FOUR that I would have been justified in shooting, but I have not shot anyone, nor do I desire to.
If I ever have to shoot at anyone, I want it to be NECESSARY not just JUSTIFIABLE. The difference is probably a very personal distinction. Do you understand what I mean?
My bud's shooting was necessary. There was no time to try and figure out an alternative, and the BG had an apparent weapon. I darn sure would have fired had I been there, and had I arrived 10 seconds sooner, I would have been in the middle of it.
