Boy, 13, dies after being shot at gun show
Alabama boy accidentally shot at Norcross gun show

By ANDREA JONES
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

The 13-year-old Alabama boy accidentally shot in the face at a Gwinnett gun show Sunday died at 12:10 p.m. today, hospital officials said.

A single bullet struck Stephen Bray King in his right eye and lodged in his brain just after noon Sunday, two hours into the Eastman Gun Show.

The boy's father, Anthony Grant, 38, said his son was standing on his left side and facing a vendor's counter when the gun was fired.

It was unclear how the shooting happened or whose gun, a .38-caliber revolver, was involved. Police are still investigating the incident to determine whether charges will be filed, Gwinnett County police spokesman Ray Dunlap said.

Stephen was taken to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Atlanta, where he underwent surgery.

He was a rising freshman at Prattville High School in Prattville near Montgomery.

I've often wondered what could happen at a gun show, if some nut, while looking at a gun, placed a round in it, then left. Anyone pulling the trigger could set it off. Thus the rule- assume all guns are loaded and never point them at anything you do not entend to shoot.
Very, very sorry to hear this.

I heard on TV that it entered the back of his head and lodged in the eye-socket. Also it might have been his Father that shot him.
I just copied this from an Atlanta newspaper:

"It appears to be an accidental shooting," said Gwinnett Police spokesman Ray Dunlap, who did not expect charges to be filed. "At this point, we don't know if it was a vendor's gun, but it was not a gun being exhibited on a table. It was an unfortunate discharge."

I wonder how it is that 36 hours after the incident, the question of who owned and who fired the weapon is still "unclear?"

I worked gun shows for almost 12 years--about 35 shows each year. I've lost count of the number of accidental discharges. On 4 occasions, someone was injured. Two of those injured were dealers, and 2 were people walking the aisles. All were shot with guns on display that were not unloaded before being put on the tables.

I have also lost count of the number of guns I've unloaded at my tables after they were handed to me by some dude wanting to sell or trade. Some of those dudes were off-duty cops.

At a gun show in Wichita, Ks. in 1977, my friend and I observed three teens putting single rounds of 22 LR in pistols. We turned them over to security guards. Do not know what happened to them. If AD's are occurring, it would appear that the show operators have poor safety rules. All the shows that I have set up tables at require the guns to be inspected by show personnel and the actions tied open or shut, so they can not be operated. This was brought about because a lady was killed with a 7mm Mag. at the Garden City gun show in the late 70's because the guns were not inspected at the door. This gun was a bolt action, was laid on the table with the bolt closed and the safety off and when someone picked it up by the grip, his finger was on the trigger and boom. WE walked in just as they were carrying her out the door on a gurney.
