C.B. Radios

In all the hoopla lately about cyber-terrorism,and the possibility that terrorists could target our communications systems, it occured to me that the only wireless form of communication that can't be affected by such an attack, would be ye olde C.B. radio. So, I'm in the market for a couple, but don't know a whole lot about brands, what a decent one costs etc.My pop says, that just about any will do fine, the trick is the antenna.A good antenna can give even an inexpensive c.b. very good range. Is this true?I would appreciate any help any one could lend in helping me with my endeavor.

Honestly, if your going to get into radio communications, you should do it right. What you need to do is go down to Radio Shack, and start asking some questions about HAM radio's. I'd setup a base station at home with a nice attena in your back yard, and a generator at home to run your box. And then also invest in a nice portable unit, possibly a handheld. This way you can listen to all the really nice frequencies, not just the truckers talking about lot lizards... :)

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

    Thanks ,but I don't believe I have the $$$ for such a set-up.Besides,
I'm a renter, and I don't believe the land lord would be real fond of an antenna tower on his rental property.

For a Base station get a Galaxy about $450.00 tuned up to transmit about 25 watts instead of the FCC maximum 4watt and put a 20ft Antron Antenna with good heavy coax. When the weather is right you can talk all over the U.S.and Canada. You can switch over to side band and get about 40 watts. You have acess to about 250 channels. For your car any quality radio will do but you will want to have it tuned up to,you cant get as many watts bot you can get 12 or so if the Radio shop guy knows what he is doing. The best mobile antenna is probably the Wilson 5000.And make sure you get Power Mikes for both radios, you will want a desktop mike for your base.Im just passing along what Ive heard as it is illegal to broadcast more than 4 watts on regular CB band. And you will probably have to find a cb shop around the Interstate to get your radio peaked and tuned.I have a FCC liscensed ham radio system thats fun in the winter you can talk all over the US. and then some.If your really interested its a fun hobby.

Cobra 48 GTL, trick it out, you have the best of both worlds, CB and AM. has 5 bands, and about 3500 Freq,s on AM 120 channels below one and 120 channels above 40. double that on Sideband, then there are the fm channels. and the radio dont cost a fortune.

Remember anything that transmits and receives can be jammed. It's merely finding a frequency and providing a stronger signal to jam.

The only secure mode is landline unless it's tapped or cut.

on a mobile radio you can get a radio peaked and tuned.a cobra 29 ltd classic will swing about 25 watts.my galaxy 88 will swing about 45 watts, but it has been super tweaked.if you get a 500 dollar radio and a 15 dollar antannae, you have a 15 dollar radio.your antannae and especially your swr are VERY important.wilson is a good brand of anntanae if you are gonna be on 27.185.if you are going to get a radio nthat has uppers and lowers and 8 different bands etc.etc.....you will need an antannae that is more broadband than the wilson
