rust on a sig

I got a sig p-226 that i must have gotten rain on and put it ion my gun cabinet...didnt pick it up for about 3 weeks...went to strap it on yesterday and it had several rust spots on it.this is peculiar because the slide is made of stainless.there are some small rust spots on the trigger as well as the decocker, slide release, and the disassembly lever.could this be a factory problem.the 1 year warranty is up.if sig wont fix it what is the best way for me to get rid of the corrosion that is already their and keep anymore from starting??kinda disillusioned at the moment.

Get some 0000 steel wool (or bronze wool if you can find it) and use a GOOD cleaner (I recommend either Blue Wonder or RB-17). Rub lightly to avoid further damage to the finish. After removing the rust - OIL IT

SUBMARINER, I too have a Sig (P229) that will show light rust even if not exposed to rain. Before I stored all of my guns in a cabinet with dessicant I used to keep that pistol in a foam case, it always showed slight discoloration even though it is made partly of SS. I think Sigs are just like that. I cleaned the rust off and oiled it up and I haven't had a problems since.

Submariner If you try this I believe it will work.Buy some Break Free {CLP)Cleaner, lubricant protectant.Apply to the rusty area and let sit 15 minutes, then scrub off with a clothe of cotton patch.Repeat the process. Then apply it heavily and let it set over night then remove oil. That stuff eats Rust.I one day took my P229 out and siliconed it,I silicone all pistols and oil rifles of course I oil the pistols slide rails etc.Bot I noticed the screws on the left side of the gun which when carried is up against me,were rusted Horribly,I have a spare pair of Hougue grips and also a pair of polymer grips. It also came with three extra grip screws,I figured for sure Id be replaceing those two screws. But I put Break free on the screws, and let it set over night. The next morning the rust was gone I just wiped the oil out and it did the job.

    Best!!

It sounds like Sig did not passivate the stainless steel correctly. I would write them a letter asking if the are aware of this problem. The heat treatable 17-4 stainless if passivated correctly should not develop rust spots. I have had stem points, that I made (again 17-4 PH), found after a year in the ocean, and they don't rust.

Submariner see if you can find some stuff called Shiela shine (sp)..
Here in the gulf of mexico all Stainless steel panels start to surface rust we keep them clean with that stuff..

And it helps on the rusting it makes them shine real purdy.
I will get the roustabout to find a can of it today and try to get you some info. on it...

    I have a SIGPRO 2340.
Never exposed to rain or dampness, and gets real lite
rust spots on the back of slide between fins that can
just be wiped of with rag and oil. I think for the most
part it is just surface rust. I try to oil it at least
once a week or erevytime I shoot it. Seems to work.

If you gun is exposed to a place where any dust can
settle , it may be picking up a small amount of dust
and collecting moisture on that. Best to keep it stored
in air tight case, without being against
    any cloth such as cotton.

thanx guys...I guess i was just under the wrong notion that the stainless wouldnt rust.I carry it alot and so the oil i put on the outside gets rubbed off and i was a little careless putting it away.guess its just a learning experience........
