Student who killed teacher, wounded another in 1997 calls for weapons ban
Fri May 3, 4:59 AM ET

VIENNA, Austria - A man who fatally shot a teacher and seriously wounded another instructor in 1997 is calling for a sweeping weapons ban that would keep guns out of private hands in Austria, a magazine reported Friday.

The gunman, identified only as Helmut Z., told the weekly "News" magazine that he never would have been able to gun down the two teachers at his school "if I hadn't had such easy access to my father's gun."

Helmut Z. was 15 at the time of the May 1997 shooting spree, which killed 48-year-old teacher Annemarie Kral. After slaying Kral, the teen-age gunman calmly reloaded and wounded another teacher, Gertrude Winkler, with a single shot.

During his trial in Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna, the gunman admitted he had used the gun in an attempt to rape a classmate, and shot the teachers when they intervened to protect the girl. He was sentenced to eight years in prison but was released on parole last September.

Z. told "News" it was "a fortunate coincidence" that he was able to get his hands on his father's pistol, and he called for a total ban on private weapons possession in Austria, which already has strict gun laws.

"Availability means murder," he told the magazine, reacting to last week's school shooting in Erfurt, Germany, where a 19-year-old expelled student fatally shot 16 people at his school before taking his own life.

"Hands off weapons - no student should have access to them, and in my experience, neither should any private individual," he said. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020503/ap_wo_en_ge/austria_school_gunman_1

Sentenced to 8 years for murder and attempted rape and out in half that time? Sounds like Kalifornia. He'll go far in politics when he decides to run for office.

Of course its the gun's fault. If I didn't have a car I wouldn't have got my speeding ticket last year. Thats why I keep my guns locked in the safe. If they ever got out they would probably jump out and commit crimes while I am asleep. The logic (lack of) that these people spew. Morals from a multiple killer. When Feinstein and Boxer hear of this clown, his memoirs will be required reading in the Kalifornia public schools.
