Is it that hard to get a pistol permit?

I would like to know what is looked by the authorities when you apply for a handgun permit. I'm sure its different in each state, But soon I'm gonna attempt this seemingly impossible task of owning a handgun in a "free" county. I have no felonies at all, I've never even been arrested for that matter. Heck I've only been pulled over 4 times in my whole life and ended up with only a "fix-it" ticket. Most of you guys seem to have hand guns and I would like some reassurance and some facts on what I face trying to do this. Thanks I live in NY[This message has been edited by Hans Grueber (edited 02-19-2002).]

You'd do best to tell us what state your in, then someone there could answere you with confidence. You sound like your a good canidate and shouldn't have any problems. I'm sure you must=*Be at least 21.*resident of that state for at least 6 months.* Have no felony convitions.* Be mentaly stable.* Not be dependent on any drug. (Cigaretts, cigars ect. not included) * Show that you can operate a handgun proficiently.* Owe no back taxes.* Not be under a restraining order.* Have paid all child supports. This is basicly it in Texas (though I'm sure someone will tell me I forgot one). Here, you go to a ffl dealer to get the paperwork and sign up, then they will advise you on how to proceed.

In Virginia you don't need a permit to own a handgun but you do need a permit to carry concealed. To buy a handgun there is a instant background check which you would pass easily. To get the concealed carry permit all you need to do is take a NRA pistol safety course and apply at your local courthouse and wait 45 days for background check and then be fingerprinted and photographed. The cost is $50 and is good for 5 years. You hurt Sams feelings with the half albino bat with wings cut off comment so I had to give him a rawhide chew to take his mind off it. If you get stopped- just show the reciept to the officer of your purchase (go straight home) and no problem.

The concealed carry permit is for hiding it under your clothing, loaded and ready to use. Without the permit it can still be loaded but it must be laying in plain view like on the seat of your car. Unloaded you can have it in a container like a paper bag or gun case.

It's also legal to carry it in plain view in a holster without a permit but not recomended.

In PA. all you need is $14.00 and 2 passport photos. 14 days later you get a letter saying "We have found no reason not to issue you a license to carry." Pick up your license at the County Court House. In FL. you have to take a 2 hr. class, prove you can rapid fire and hit your target, get fingerprinted, pay $117.00, provide 2 passport photos and wait and wait and wait.

In PA(at least the county that I live in) 12 bucks, sheriff does a little investigation, 2 weeks later, you got a permit to carry for five years. No training course required- the way it should be.

In Massachusetts, it is not too hard, but takes time, and you do have to take a safety course. The real downside to handguns in Ma. is you can only buy S&W, Walther, and now a few SIG's new. No Glock, Beretta, etc... unless they were made before Oct '98. This is because Ma. requires handguns to have certain safety features or they can't be sold in this state.Rifles are still good in this state, can get Bushmasters, Romanian AK's, etc... and high cap mags.Permits to carry concealed are a different story...

are you sure you have to be 21 to own a handgun in Texas? Because at the shooting range here you have to 18 to go by yourself, and if your under 18 you have to have a adult with you. Or is that just for the rifles?[This message has been edited by Gene B. (edited 02-20-2002).]

Hans, hate to tell you this but, as a New York resident, you CANNOT buy a handgun in VA. Since the Gun Control Act of 1968, no one may buy a handgun out-of-state (thus the requirement that auction purchases such as GB must be shipped to an FFL).Wish it weren't so, but it is. Prior to 1968, you could buy any gun through the mail and have it sent directly to you (subject to state laws). I can remember surplus Mausers being advertised on the back of comic books. It was a great idea. Of course with firearms readily available to 'children' back then, we had all those school shootings -NOT.

Hans, Call your county clerks office and ask for the person who handles pistol permits. It's all run by the counties in NY. Every county is different. It takes several (4-8) months and cost around $200.00 when I got mine 10 years ago. That's upstate, I hear NYC is closer to $1000.00 and you need a lawyer. The thing that takes the longest and costs the most is the records check from NYS dept of mental health. Then it depends on how your county judge handles permits. Mine took 8 months and sat on the judges desk for 6 weeks before getting her signature. Start shopping now for a place that does passport photos I think you need 5 of them if I remember correctly. The place they send you to will be a rip off because they got a monopoly of sorts. I paid $25.00 for 2 sheets of four photos and the place they were sending people to was charging that much per sheet.WOODS

The $200.00 price I mentioned included the photos and notary fees for your references. That's what I figured my total expenses to be, not just thier listed fees.WOODS

21 and being able to pass the NICS check in Alaska. Of course, with the CCW permit, no NICS required. 12 hour course for the CCW and then an FBI background check. $120 total at the time 3 years ago. Good for 5 years.

In Indiana if your background is clean you are nearly guaranteed a permit. The law simply requires that you stipulate "personal defense" or "defense of my person" as the reason for a concealed carry permit. Just thought I'd chime in. It also comes in handy for purchases because you get your gun instantly without any additional fee for a background check, for which the govt. charges the dealer $3.00 -- he usually adds a few bucks and profits from that too. Concealed means just that. Showing your gun around is called "brandishing" (if the cops choose to do so) and can lose you your permit.

If you lived here in Texas, and all of what you siad is true, as long as there is no past due child support or back taxes, you are a shoe in. However, in New York, I think you would have to get a signed letter from Bill, Hilary, and Sarah to even qualify for a written "NO'.

When I got my CT permit (1991), it was basically just a matter of filling out 1 form, 2 fingerprint cards (one stayed at the local PD, the other went to DC for the background check) and submitting with them a couple of pictures and a letter from an NRA certified firearm instructor that I was competent to use a firearm. That got me my local permit (some requirements vary by town i.e. character reference letter, etc.). Once I got that, I filled out a 3"x5" card from the state public safety department to get my state permit. Total time: approx. 4 months. When I moved to GA (1996), they required the fingerprint cards and 1 form and I was done. Total time: approx. 2 months.CT allows former residents to keep their permits and renew them from out of state, which I recently did.See, it's easy!

Once again, thanks guys for the input. I've looked into it and it doesn't seem to be such a chore after all. Hopefully soon I can put a big iron on my hip!
