Racoons like Pepperoni!

I keep a live trap set in my yard most of the year. (I'm in a residential neighborhood next to a fairly well wooded park; the town does no "rodent" control so I have to keep the wildlife "in check".)

Mostly I catch possums. * are smarter and reach-in to steal the bait often without getting themselves caught; I'll bait the trap with it wired open so they get comfortable with it.

I use whatever I have around for bait. I had some frozen pizzas and didn't like the extra greasy pepperoni they put on them--so I'd been baiting the trap with pepperoni.

The bait was cleaned-out consistently (the trap being wired open) for a few nights. Last night it was set to trip...

...and I got me a *...who has now traveled to that "great forest in the sky" (with a little help from Mr. Remington).

I hope they have pizza in * heaven--with pepperoni of course.

I have a 1/2 grown one on my front porch every night.
    He loves cat food.
The cat isn't afraid of him they will eat by side by side.

Competentone.......Ya started out real well with the story
and all........"* to smart" I really like that part.......
But like saxonpig said why didn't you just relocate him......
I'm a big hunter and kill and EAT a lot of game............

I never did understand why anyone would kill something when they
had a choice to relocate the animal, being in a cage and all....

If ya ate him I wouldn't think ya would of said that about
    * heaven........* is really good eating, you just have
to make sure you remove all the glands....preboil with season
and grill or bake in oven with sliced sweet pototoes on top...

    * are smarter than most other critters when it come to a trap. When I set my traps for them, I make sure the sides, top, and back are covered and then "TIE or WIRE" the bait onto the back of the trap. Works almost every time. Except for that really big one that bent the door to escape. But then a little reinforcing on the door and I got him too. Then I RELOCATE the pesky little buggers. Get ready for a little adrenalin (sp) rush when you let them go, you never know which way they are going to run.

If I knew then, what I know now.

Why kill them?... relocate them... they wouldnt be in your backyard if you werent in theirs....
Killing animals for food is fine... but just because they are in your yard?...

    Competentone and 4wheeler,
Thanks for the bait suggestions, I've been using canned cat-food with holes punched in the top so they can't reach in and pull the bait out bit by bit.
I've relocated about a 1/2 dozen to a nice little park across the big river. Problem is a dozen more took their place. They all share a certain fondness for the taste of koi, just like the ones I have swimming in my pond!!
I'll relocate no more of them, but they'll get to travel extensively as * SKIN CAPS!
The first cap I have made will be presented to my neighbor, the one that's been feeding them!

When I was younger, this part of the country had few *, fewer possums, and tons of pheasants. Now there's not a pheasant to be found, even on the nearby wildlife refuge.
But, we sure have a ton of *!

As far as eating rodents is concerned, small chance in hell I'll try coonass's recipe.

    Pickenup,
They sure do come out of those traps like they were shot from a cannon don't they? And the wise man uses caution. Did you know that an adult tom cougar won't tangle with a mature *? He probably figures he'll win, but, he knows for sure he'll be injured badly in the process!

    Saxonpig,
How do you live catch a mouse??

BUT OOOOOHHHH THEY'RE JUST SO CUTE!!
    Yea........ Right!

    Sorry coonass,
I tried puma once and was sure it would gag me.
It was the sweetest, most tender wild game I've ever eaten!
But don't * have some kind of parasites like rabbits have??
Around here you can't eat the rabbits until after a good, hard, long freeze.
At least that's what I've been told, and those weather conditions almost never occur here. Too much marine air influence.
I'll copy your recipe to word,,,,,, just maybe someday I'll try it.

no * don't like rabbits at least not here..........Can you get
ya hand on some crab or crawfish boil..............cut the * up
just like rabbit......You MUST MUST get the glands (musk) out before cooking,,,,,,,,,,boil in crab boil until tender.....take out, season
and grill on pit or oven bake with sweet potatoes sliced on top....
WOW talk about good,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,But I only kill the young ones about the size of a big swamp rabbit................

Thanks for the open minded come back..............

It is illegal to "relocate" wild life in South Carolina--and for good reason, moving a wild animal outside its natural migration territory could spread disease.

About two years ago a neighbor had to shoot a rabid *. The problem is over-population (for the racoons)--and no, I don't live in a new neighborhood which has encroached into the *'s territory; many of the houses in this neighborhood date back to the 1800's; some were built in the 1700's. They've been living here, coexisting with humans for a long time, but unless some of you have some type of plan for birth control for these critters (racoons, apossums, squirrels and the occassional feral cat--animal control will take the cats); the only other option is "death control".

Besides, even if it wasn't illegal, and I had the time to "relocate" them, I'd still consider it more humane to kill a wild animal right where it is caught than to terrorize it for a half-hour ride into new territory.

And I don't consider killing as "fun". I don't even hunt; partly because I personally see nothing "sporting" about it, and mostly because I don't like wild game. I have helped in the slaughter of a few steers and sheep--my youth was on a small farm. Killing a "dumb" animal is a not an issue connected with emotion; it's just something you do.
