I was watching Lonesome Dove today and was wondering if anyone knows what kind of revolver Augustus carries? Its some type of cap and ball, or maybe a conversion to cartridge?

    Looked like a Walker Colt to me, as best I remember.

    Definitely a Walker Colt. As I remember there is no front catch for the loading lever. All Colts after the Walker had that catch. That would fit as the Walker was made in limited quantities especially for the Texas Rangers and was at times designated as a 'dragoon'.

    Was watching the show last night and I think my DVD has a line missing. I remember the line from the scene when the young Irish dies of snake bite:

    Nute: "He's dead. He was so young"

    Gus: "Life is short just shorter for some than others."

    Am I losing it but wasn't that line about life being short in the original TV version?

    My two favorite parts of Lonesome Dove:

    (1) Augustus cracks the mouthy bartender for lipping off to him, then opines how there "ain't no law against whackin' a surly bartender";

    (2) Woodrow (Tommy Lee Jones) sees the Army scout quirting Newt with his reins, rams the scout's horse with his own, then proceeds to beat the ever-loving snot out of the scout, almost finishing the job (permanently) by attempting to use a set of heavy iron pincers to do a little impromptu blacksmithing while the guy's out cold with his head on the anvil. I swear Woodrow looked like he was trying to kick a field goal with the guy's face when he booted him as he was trying to get up....Best kick, and one of the best whoopin's I've ever seen delivered on the silver screen.

    I liked the part where Gus is hunkered down behind his horse and the guys who ran him down are milling around at a point that they think is out of range of Gus's rifle. The one bad guy starts dancing around like a chicken, Gus smiles, adjusts his sights for the distance and drops one into the bad guys gut!
